If you were to expand to eight drives then the formula changes to 1-(1/8) or 87.5%, meaning that with RAID 5 the more drives you add the more usable space you get of the total.

On the other hand, the formula for RAID 1 is 1/n, so regardless of how many drives are added to the array, the total usable space will always come out to a percentage equivalent to the capacity of a single drive.
Sorry, I don't know the first thing about unRAID but storage in general is tricky business to just jump into so if possible try and do a trial run of whatever you'll be getting into, and don't forget about the recovery procedure!

I'm getting 8 from 4x2TB = 8TB. so 75% of 8TB is 6TB.

Fortunately UnRAID allows, in fact more or less forces you to try it before you buy it, with a 1 month grace period. So I can try it with the 2x2TB disks I have, on the hardware I have (plus what's coming in the next couple of days), then if that seems to work I'll order two more 2TB disks, set up the array properly and copy everything across. Once I'm sure it's stable I'll buy a subscription.

Also forgot there is freenas which uses zfs. I would say it is in the middle of RAID and unRAID. It is software raid that acts more like traditional RAID. But like petrol said test what you think will work the best for you and understand the limits of each.

I considered FreeNAS but the hardware requirements specify 8GB RAM minimum, and my motherboard can't go above 4GB.

Everyone has very different opinions when it comes to Freenas and RAM requirements. The best argument i have heard is 1gb of RAM per terabyte of storage. Just pointing out more options you could use.

Yeah I saw that in the users guide for it. I'm going to be starting out with 4x2TB drives though. I'll certainly reconsider it if UnRAID doesn't work.

I'll consider Amahi if UnRAID won't work - it uses Greyhole to pool drives which I have come across before. Only problem is redundancy is not so great.

Fair point. I think FreeNAS will probably be the first thing I try if UnRAID doesn't work, it seems to be the most similar to UnRAID and I'm pretty sure that I've used it before (long time ago).

FreeNAS no longer runs on anything less than 8GB of RAM apparently. If you wish to run it on less than 4 you are advised to use the older version and use UFS, instead of ZFS.
