Ok here is my issue. I got my hands on a free EVGA 970 tonight from a friend and I want to install it into this Asus G20. The asus G20 uses a 230 Watt Laptop power supply and offers you a second plug to use a 180 watt power supply you have to buy for around 65 bucks.
Since 230w is not enough to run this PC with the 970 will 410 watts thats 230w +that 180w be enough with no overclock or is that pushing it? I am currently laid off so building a new PC is out of the question for at least a few months until I can find another job. I am trying to work with what I got.
If you can spare about $20, I would suggest you get an EVGA SuperNova G2 power supply. The one I'm linking is the 550 W which is more than enough power for your system.
i cant use those power supplies on the Asus G20. The asus G20 uses laptop power supplies. The one they give you is 230w and I was just told by asus in order to use the GTX 970 I gotta buy this for $45.00
THe asus G20 will only allow a 230w and a 180w combined. I did find videos on youtube that say you can use any video card but you need that extra 180w external PSU
is the evga 970 he gave you have the reference blower cooler that exhaust out of the case? thats the only style you can use in the G20 or you will overheat everything in the case.
this is reference blower cooler
this is the style cooler you cannot use in the G20 case
no but I have an idea for that. I am going to dremel out 2 holes for the GPU to breathe out of the case rather then dump air inside the case. I just found this for a PSU its only 35 bucks. Not much I can do at this point I got laid off 2 weeks ago and its been a struggle. Ive already had to sell my ps4 and xbox one so im trying to get something of a PC going for now until I get this job I am trying for which has great pay and bonuses every 3 months.
If I had to cut a couple breather holes for the GPU to breathe then I will
how do they supply power for the gpu in the G20? the gtx 970 takes a 6 and 8 pin pci-e power cable from the power supple unit, some take 2 6 pin pci-e power cable's, depends if it's over clocked from the factory.
the motherboard inside the case comes with a 6 pin and 8pin connector. you plug the 6 pin and 8 pin to the mobo then to the card and the laptop power supplies power the PC. They have tutorials on youtube and I have all the parts I just need the 180w laptop PSU and I can use it. Ive seen videos of people installing 980s into this with the 230w and 180w psu. I wish I had to the funds to just build a good rig but with this damn lay off its screwed everything so im working with what I got. the 970 was free and the asus VX238h-w monitor and the asus G20 I got from a friend for pretty much nothing.
Im waiting to hear from this company I applied for over the weekend. they pay well 13-16 an hour with 2500-7000 every 3 month bonuses. my old boss works there and is trying to get me in. then I want to build a big rig
Should work fine, theres lots of videos of people doing 1070s but i think that runs on less watts. Don't hurt to try. If it draws to much power expect your PC to auto restart. And like others said you are going to be DUMPing tons of hot air into your compact computer.

I don't plan to do anything. This is really only temp until I land this job because I do have plans on building a real nice rig. If it wasn't for the layoff I wouldn't even have the Asus g20.
I just want to get the 180 watt PSU I need install the 970 and get back to playing witcher 3. I found what I need on eBay for about 35 bucks. Gonna see if my brother will loan me the 35 and order this
Yeah I know what you're saying, I don't like pre-built either but that G20 sounds kinda nice, to bad it doesn't have the i7 K model so you could use it in a different build.
I went ahead and modified the side panel to allow the 970 to vent outside the case rather then inside. Its gonna be awhile before I get the 970 installed since I dont have the funds for the power supply needed right yet but at least its done and ready

thanks it came out perfect. i like it you know the real issue with the asus G20 is venting. its small and IMO doesnt have proper venting for the GPU so I made my own.
