Phenom II X4 B95 Overclock potential and MoBo recommendations

Hey guys. I would like to know everyone's opinion on the B95 Phenom II. It's basically a rebranded X4 945 as a business CPU. Same exact specification though. I got it for $31 on eBay. No way I'd pass up a quad core for that price, especially going from an Athlon II X2 215 lol.

But I was wondering, what's the best OC these chips can normally hit and still be stable? Right now it's stock at 3.0GHz and I can only get 3.1 with SetFSB before it starts to get unstable lol but I figure that because I can't tweak my volts, or my RAM timings or any of that good stuff.

I would much rather do a BIOS OC with a decent board. I was wondering what a decent AM2+ MoBo would be that's a mATX form factor? It's going in the FrankenDell I have as my sig rig and I'm using the stock case

AM3 is totally out of the question, as I am not going to be able to afford a MoBo and new DDR3 RAM as I just got this 8gb crucial kit last month. I'm just sticking to AM2+ for a while.

Thanks guys.

This might be a hard one as AM2+ is considered WW1 ancient lol. Pretty much any high end Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte board will do the trick. Finding one for a good price will be a pain and goooooooood luck trying to find one new.

Chip is AM3, have played with one in fact a couple of the 4X B series, was not impressed 4.0 range as memory serves but could of been below average examples. Used a Gigabyte 990FXA UD5 Rev 3.0 pretty good board with the Phenoms.

My bad didn't pay close attention to OP, not had much luck putting AM3s in AM2+ DDR2 boards have a Asus M4A79 Deluxe knocked 500 hz off a Phenom X6 and wasn't that good with AM2s after the BIOS flash for the X6.

New or used doesn't really matter to me lol. I'm an eBay warrior. My CPU, RAM, and PSU were all sourced from eBay lol.

I found a decent deal on an Asus M4A785 M motherboard. I think I might go with that, looks like the overclock potential is pretty good on it.

Using a CH4 formula my B93 x4 was able to do 4.3xx on air 24/7 but that was it.

You may be able to OC slightly with additional air flow and something better than stock cooling on the CPU.
I added these to VRM's waaay back in the early days when win7 first came around biggrin.gifWarning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Got three of those mobo around here.

There's some decent gains from overclocking the north bridge on whatever board you choose. My old 955 did a blistering 53 gflops in IBT. I believe a good oc is 4 or 4.1 and from what I remember I only ever got it to 3.7 though and my nb was 2.6. Used a xigmatek dark knight and msi 790fxgd70 mobo. Thats ddr3 and am3 though.

That'd be about perfect clocks for me. Was that using AM3/DDR3 or AM2+ and DDR2?

I'm working out a deal with the kid I sold my previous desktop to- I'm gonna trade him 2GB of extra RAM plus my stock cooler for the AC Freezer 64 Pro that's in his (my old) desktop. That HSF is a beast. Mine sucks currently, it's a small form factor one, it's like an inch tall! I'm surprised my CPU idles at 37C and not in the 50s lol. It'll work perfect for the Athlon II 245 that's in my old PC tho.

Do those make a significant difference? I read up on that mobo and they were saying they get pretty toasty.

The mobo with a quad OC'd will get hot but should be within reason in a case with good air flow and with HS on the VRMs with active cooling. (the old stock HS fan helps a lot)
To give you a better idea, a 1090T is too much for this mobo even at stock (depending on ambient temp of course)

In an OEM case (or am I missing something) I seriously doubt there will be enough air flow to push very far. You may have to add/change a few things here.
IMHO the freezer64 pro is more suited for a dual core OC or stock quad. Not enough capacity to OC a quad especially in a limited air flow environment.
