First water cooled rig is getting too hot

Hi!
This weekend I installed my first custom watercooling loop. Had a bit of trouble with the compression fittings, but otherwise it went a lot smoother than I expected.
Now after a 24h leak test (which showed no leakage) I put in my GPU and connected the PSU to the motherboard and so on and turned it on.
It booted up, but when I check the cpu temps with "openhardware monitor", each core kept jumping between 30C and 50C between a single refresh tick. (while gaming it peaked at 75C)

The pump was running at full speed, the radiator fans were on, the PC was in idle after boot up and the cpu is not yet overclocked.
I check for kinks and couldn't find any.
I have no idea why it got so hot, please help smile.gif

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K, 4x 4.00GHz
MB: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT
CPU Block: Phobya CPU-Cooler UC-2 LT
Radiator: Alphacool NexXxoS ST30 420mm
Pump: Alphacool VPP655
Fans: Corsair CO-9050017-RLED Air Series AF140-LED Quiet Edition 140mm

Things I'm gonna check when I get home from work:
- thermal paste on the cpu block
- the fans were selected for the fancy red LED, maybe they are unsuitable for cooling a rad?
- at the moment only two fans on the radiator, because one was faulty

Something is wrong big time. 75C on a custom liquid cooled CPU that's nothing short of disaster (AIOs are different thing). Even my 2011-3 during number crunching sessions when drawing ~190W are never higher than 65C.

Start with paste. Either there is not enough of it or contact between waterblock and CPU is minimal. Phobya's block is not ideal, and certainly not top performer, but still should be enough for the setup you have.

Fans are not an issue here. For 30mm radiator ANY fan will do. I'm using 500rpm Scythes on 45mm Nexxxoses in one of my rigs and it's virtually same kind of setup as yours 4790K/Z97+liquid cooled gtx690. No issues to report. I get high 40ish, low 50ish C when doing number crunching. (CPU/VGA are not OCed because there is no point).

>Remove the waterblock and check thermal paste spreading, should be really thin nearly "Transparent" and cover almost all the IHS surface.
>Check if you have connected correctly the pump and the waterblock (inlet / outlet)

This. You should definitely check the mount and the TIM but even a bad mount should give you better temps than what you are seeing. I definitely think it could be pump inlet / outlet.

I will check the thermal paste as soon as I get home, but I'm rather confident that I didn't screw that up.
Even if it is too thick it shouldn't be that bad, right?
The instructions said to make sure to not overtighten the screws holding the cooler to the cpu, which I did. But I may have been too careful and it's not tight enough on the cpu?

Concerning the inlets/outlets:
- I double checked it on the pump (it even has a section in the manual telling me which outlet/inlet combination is acceptable).
- I was unsure about the cpu cooler, because there are only arrows, but I concluded that the one pointing TOWARDS the port is the inlet (that's the center one) and the pointing away is the outlet (on the edge of the cooler).
- The ports on the radiator are interchangeable, I believe

What's a TIM?

edit: oh and thanks for the replies so far! smile.gif

Sounds like the rad isn't full or loop is vapor locked.

Could you explain what I would have to do to fix that? I'm sorry, I'm absolutely new to water cooling.

TIM, short for Thermal Interface Material. It's the more formal way to say thermal paste.

This probably will not improve your temps but your loop can look better ... IMO

Tilt the case in all directions carefully with the fill port open to remove air from the loop

My rig has an issue (at first re-fill) of getting the pump to actually MOVE the water because of gravity and who knows what all. Simply put, when having an issue with getting the pump to move water and getting the rad(s) filled, just tip the case while the pump is running. My rig requires being stood up completely, where rad is vertical, in and out at top, to get full, and once full and air bubbles are cleared, i can set her back down normal (this is a tech station) and its fine from there on out.

Tip your case all around, tap on tubes and rad to "persuade" air bubbles to break lose, etc...
