CPU overclock : Max safe temp or Max safe voltage ?

Hi !

I'm currently in the process of overclocking my i5-6600k. I have read a lot about overclocking skylake processors and the max vcore I see is between 1.35v and 1.45v.

My question is : If my temperature are fine on a stress test with 1.45v (with a Noctua Nh-D15 for example), is 1.45v ok ?

I haven't tried 1.45v yet. I just started overcloking and my temps were 60 at 4.4ghz at 1.35v using the x264 tool from this website. I'm using the guide here on overclock.net for skylake cpus overclock.

Thanks !

Unless you are under water or/and dont care for the longevity of the chip dont go above 1.4v after that the temps spike super high and its just not good for the chip. as for temps. i generally go for 75 to 80c max when stress testing/max load. the guide here is pretty much perfect to use for guidelines. hope this helps.

Intel says max for skylake is 1.52, but then again most overclockers for skylake say 24/7 use dont go over 1.3v, some says 1.35.

If you have safe temps and don't mind high voltage at loads i would suggest using all C-state so when you are not using the CPU it will down volt the cpu.

But then again with that cpu iv seen most get 4.6ghz with 1.3v and you say you are at 4.4 with 1.35?  You might have a power hungry chip.

Honestly skylake is a **** overclocker in my experience. my chip is at 4.5ghz at 1.34v anything lower and it is unstable. its freaking ridiculous. ( Havent updated my sig in a while )

Ya i could see that being the case just because even the 6 and 8 cores OC very badly too.  Vs the 5000 series ones, i even seen 5960x hitting 4.8ghz when what the skylake 8 core can't even do 4.4 if your lucky, probably even 4.2 if ur lucky.   Even my 3770k back in the day did 4.8ghz at only 1.28 v,  and my current 4790k does 5ghz 1.37v.    I miss the days of 2500k 5ghz easy mode OC.  Or the i7-920 stock 2.6ghz OC to 4.4ghz, or my old 980x OC to 4.4ghz.  The margins keep getting smaller and smaller.   And with crabylake coming out at 4.5ghz stock,  i wonder if they chips will even OC past 4.6.

The truth, it appears, is that nobody really knows. Asus' own guide endorses a maximum of 1.45V or, to play it safe, 1.40V. Then again, the guide posted by Raja@ASUS (in the Z170 Motherboards Q&A Thread) states 1.42V if stress testing with a triple-rad water-cooling.

Like the OP, I have wondered about this question as well. I've pushed my 6700k (also using an NH-D15) as high as 4.7Ghz without temps being an issue. Core temp only only exceeded 80C once I pushed it to 4.8Ghz.

Normal OC is 4.5Ghz @ 1.235V in BIOS, but I've been toying with entering HWBot's 36th Rookie Rumble.

Just out of curiosity, what batch number is your chip?

Thanks for the replies !

I said I was 1.35v at 4.4ghz because I wanted to get the maximum overclock for that voltage.
I could get it stable with a lower voltage probably.

Ended up at 4.7ghz, 1.35v stable with x264 running overnight. Temps never went higher then 65c. They usually stay around 61c during the test.

Does the x264 stress test, test the ram memory ? I got a DDR4 3200 14-14-14-34 at DRAM 1.35v (XMP profile)

If that holds stable long term you have a awesome cpu on your hands lol.
