What elements provide a snappy browser experience? - Page 2

I'll just address both posts here, mobile has trouble multi quoting.

I've suspected it could be the ssd only because after a few months of non use it would lose the drive entirely when booting. Although it doesn't happen as much anymore it could be signs of a failing drive, I figured it could be just because I didn't use it for a while.

I just tried to play some flash content and it was basically unplayable. If graphics acceleration is enabled would flash be handed off to the gpu for rendering?

When it comes to functionality of the browser I'm pretty ignorant sadly,so I apologize if my OP was a bit vague

I'll try disabling hardware acceleration soon

I disabled hardware acceleration and it resolved a lot of the issues I was having with video playback

This must be that the GPU is failing?

Doesn't necessarily mean that the gpu is failing, could be diver or general compatibility issues. For instance there was an nVidia diver a while back that would cause the "display driver has crashed and recovered" error randomly in Chrome if acceleration was enabled, a later driver fixed it.

I'm not entirely sure how hardware acceleration interacts with the gpu I just know I've seen it cause issues before and is usually what I try first when having issues with video playback or general page loading issues.

It seems that GPU acceleration was the issue, disabling fixed most of the issues I was having but with it disabled the browser is still pretty choppy.

I just finished installing windows 10 on this machine, hoping that it will give it a little boost in overall snappiness. Just have to learn a bit about the tracking to disable.

I updated to the latest nvidia drivers before going windows 10 and still couldnt play any flash content, I expect that this ruled out driver issues.

Ill try playing content again windows 10 and see if it fairs any differently

Awesome, glad it solved at least some of the issues. Not sure what to tell you about the flash content though, sorry. I haven't had any troubles with that with Chrome and haven't used Firefox in ages.

It seems that the issue was narrowed down to nvidia optimus. I disabled it in the BIOS to force the GPU to become the primary solution and so far its much better, along with Windows 10. I thought it was supposed to be better than Enduro, but so far not.

Though Im not sure if I like Windows 10, random audio ads playing makes me irritable until I can pin that down. That and the mouse pad just drops off sometimes.

Still considering a GPU upgrade, 540m isnt exactly good enough anymore to keep up, as I can still see when the browser is choppin up a bit but I guess ill just have to live with it. 540m to 750m would be a welcomed addition to this system.

Seems people have no idea, so I'll ask the networking group for any ideas.

Basically my laptop is only slow on loading pages but after is fine, what can I do to promote browser performance? I don't have this issue on my sig rig, so it has to be the laptop, and I need the laptop to act as my primary going forward.

Thanks for any help, I need this laptop for school so I need it to work for me.

An 8 core FX , quality SSD and some fast ram - yes I'm serious. Browsing on my i7's is painfully slow by comparison.

I don't have the issue in my sig rig, that has half the threads and less than half the ram. The request in the OP was to determine what specific elements result in a snappy browser so I may better troubleshoot my system. So far it seems to be Optimus to a certain extent beyond the obvious of a weak gpu.

Even if what you claim is a empirical fact it wouldn't be a solution for me. I need to resolve the issue with the laptop as it will become my primary machine traveling with me to Korea.

Optimus.....which means you have an iGPU on that intel chip. Did you check the intel display drivers? Forcing the nvidia gpu on all the time will eat at your battery so ideally you want to disable it if you are mobile.

Ah, well if your current lappy gives up the ghost, my son's HP omen with a mobile 6700 , ssd and 960 m is the next best thing to FX when it comes to being a nimble browsing machine.

Have a safe trip, enjoy the Kimchi !
