Toshiba C50 B Windows 7 installation

Thread Starter
I'm getting this error when trying to install windows 7 on this laptop. I have changed the system configuration from UEFI to CSM and it it allows me to boot windows from a USB.

When the windows installtion screen appears and when it asks which drive to install windows, i get this error message - windows 7 cannot be installed to this disk. this computer's hardware may not support booting.

I've gone back into the bios and there are no options to change to ACHI/SATA or anything like that.

Why are you messing around with USB?

Download a Windows 7 .iso using your key. Burn it to a DVD and install it.

USB isnt the problem i've installed it from there several times. The issue is with the BIOS and getting it to allow the SSD to be bootable.

The partitions you show in your screenshot point to that computer using UEFI boot (as opposed to the old style BIOS boot). When you enabled the CSM in the UEFI/BIOS menus, the UEFI can use a BIOS compatibility mode to boot your USB stick (and the normal drive), and I think that's what you used to boot into the Windows installation program. The Windows installation program then cannot install Windows for UEFI, can only install as BIOS style boot. That's why you get that error message.

With UEFI, the drive has to use "GPT" partitioning (as opposed to "MBR"). On the drive there's then a very small FAT32 formatted partition where the boot loaders (for Windows, Linux, etc.) are saved as normal files and folders. That 200MB sized partition in your screenshot looks exactly like a FAT32 partition for UEFI boot. That's why I think it's UEFI boot and not BIOS + MBR.

You should try to see how to boot a Windows installation media through UEFI instead of as BIOS (meaning not through the CSM). If the Windows installation media you created does not want to boot, you have to try creating a new one. Something went wrong preparing it, and it does not want to do UEFI boot for some reason. I think I always used the tool "Rufus" to create installation media on USB.

Alternatively, you could switch everything over to BIOS style booting. You would have to wipe the drive completely, remove all partitions, then switch the partition table from GPT to MBR, then try to install again. Switching the drive to MBR is done in the Disk Management tool of Windows. There's a way to get into that program from within the Windows installation program. I think it might be that "advanced drive options" link that can be seen in your screenshot.

btw:

UEFI is a modern replacement for BIOS. Your computer there technically does not have a BIOS, so when talking about "BIOS menus" etc., it should be called "UEFI menus" if you are super correct about this (but no one does that really, everyone calls it "BIOS").

CSM means "compatibility support module" and adds BIOS compatibility to UEFI.

Thank you for the detail deepor. It all makes sense. Rufus has an option to create a bootable disk for UEFI. I used this to create the bootable install USB.

However the same windows ISO when used to be compatible with UEFI is showing 'windows repair' on startup and no longer windows 7 install.

Is there any reason that could be?
