For iOS or Mac users interested in VR, there isn’t a lot you can do right now without migrating to the dark sides of Android or Windows.

Occipital is aiming to get people on the iOS platform access to some more cool VR opportunities. Today, the company opened up a $500 development kit today that brings room-scale motion tracking to iOS (as well as Android) smartphones, Upload reports.

The dev kit utilizes the company’s Structure sensor. This has already been mounted to iPhones and iPads to help people build 3D meshes of their environments but this is the first attempt to give the sensor a VR-focused application. The iPhone is still a pretty imperfect platform due to system levels constraints in regards to latency, but this is the best that can be done until Apple gets its act together.

The magic of the hololens is that they offloaded all the 3D work to a custom hardware processor to keep the latency down, and battery life up. This device just looks like they got ahold of an Intel Realsense camera, but I don't understand what exactly they are contributing to the process?

Or is this structural sensor a home-grown solution, in which case it is impressive thumb.gif

One thing I'm wondering about is how accurate the sensor is. Vive / Rift / PSVR are all capable of tracking the headset with sub-millimetre precision. This may not sound important, but when the tiny natural movements of your head are not represented, even when sitting still, it is very jarring.

Other than that, true room scale, wireless VR sounds amazing.

No hand tracking?
People want "interactive" experiences. This thing is DOA.
