[Eurogamer] Advertising Standards launches investigation into No Man's Sky

The Advertising Standards Authority has confirmed to Eurogamer that it has launched an investigation into No Man's Sky.

The watchdog launched its investigation after receiving "several complaints" about No Man's Sky advertising, a representative told me.

The ASA has the power to have advertisements it believes are in breach of its code of conduct withdrawn, and prevent them from appearing again. If an advertiser refuses to comply with an ASA ruling, it can impose sanctions, such as asking internet search websites to remove a marketer's paid-for search ads.

The investigation is on-going, and so the ASA declined to comment further, but one of the complainants revealed details of its response in a post on Reddit.

The investigation revolves around No Man's Sky's Steam store page, which includes assets some believe misrepresent the controversial space game.

The ASA has contacted both Hello Games and Valve and asked them to respond to a raft of questions relating to No Man's Sky advertisements.

Complaints centre around screenshots and videos that feature more advanced animal behaviour, large-scale combat and ship-flying behaviour than ended up in the launch version of the game. Complainants also say screenshots misrepresent the graphical quality of the game.

Has anyone heard anything from the Studio or that guy since this was released? I remember seeing him post a few tweets on the first day of launch but when the crapstorm happened he like... disappeared.

He is probably stressed, freaked out, and in hiding.

He was super active in social media but stopped abruptly after release, can't find anything.

And the last update from hello games is from September 2 ...

Good to hear. It's about time this matter was brought to an official authority to be looked at. Part of the community has gotten used to saying, against its own interests, that "everybody does this", "it's marketing as usual", "get over it", "you should have known better, it's your fault", etc, etc, with none of the burden on the people who start the process.

Hello Games has been rather quiet and not even their last Twitter message on the 23rd is very reassuring, it's more like a "hey, we're still here", but little else. They limit themselves to pointing to a post on their website dated from Sept 2nd, which is also the date of Patch 1.07, saying what they have done until now, which is having brought a community/support management team on board and issuing a bunch of patches with release notes.

But other than that, there are no stated plans on improvements to the gameplay itself, nothing. Also, as of today the Steam store page only lists Patch 1.07 as the latest, with a Sept 2nd post, when, according to their Twitter, supposedly 1.09 is out since Sept 23rd. So, they didn't even bother making posts on Steam with the 1.08 and 1.09 news.

And that is worrying if they have any expectations to reverse this:

The bouncing around in communication between Sean Murray's Twitter, Hello Games's Twitter and the actual Twitter account for the No Man's Sky game also doesn't help.

No Man's Sky last post: Aug 10
Sean Murray: Aug 18
Hello Games: Sept 23

Sean Murray (whose account is actually called No Man's Sky) has way more followers, at 223K, than Hello Games' account, at 150K, and yet they decided to switch to Hello Games' for communication after all the backlash - mind you, not putting a single person under the spotlight, but rather the whole team is understandable, but they did it without directing people anywhere. Add to that the lack of posting of the last 1.08 and 1.09 patch news on Steam and it's a mess.

Edit: sorry, the link below is already mentioned in the Eurogamer article, it's not exactly news, but it's worth a read.

Update from the guy who talked to Eurogamer: https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/54n5yz/official_asa_response_valve_and_hello_games_have/

They are from the UK.

And by the way, so is the Advertising Standards Authority mentioned in the article.
