False advertising? They should be investigated for fraud.

I remember when preordering a game first became a thing. It was needed back then because if a game was popular and hyped enough, and didn't have a massive first shipment, it could take you upwards of a month to see it in availability. It also used to cost more money.

Say a 60$ game is coming out. You can preorder it for 67.50 with no bonuses back then. Your bonus was being assured you would have a copy waiting for you on the day of release and anyone who didn't preorder was usually SOL and had to wait a month or so to buy and play the game. You couldnt rent it because It was guaranteed the rental shop would be out of all copies all the time.

I remember these times because I got shafted by not getting preorders when they first started doing it, having to wait a month to play, going to the rental store 5 times a day to try and catch a copy there before someone snatched it up, asking the employees what day the soonest copy would be due back and literally waiting around hours hoping it would come through the door, and not getting it anyway.

Preorders started as a necessity to serious gamers, but now with digital distribution platforms the reason for preorders doesnt exist anymore. Now the industry has just bastardized what used to be a useful service.

I don't remember it ever being an additional cost but I guess that depends from retailer and country. In Canada (EB Games) for as long as I can remember, it was always deducted from the cost. You were just insuring the retailer that you will pick up the title within 24 - 48 hours upon release. I remember pre-ordering becoming popular because of Halo. So many people would go to the shops, you couldn't get a copy, as you're saying.

In a digital world, it really doesn't make sense. Unless you're going for a collectors addition.

I tend to agree.

Just take note of all the gameplay related questions that the dev said YES to in the TV show, get a few gaming experts to show that these details cannot be done in the actual game. I believe we already have a case to make by that point.

False advertising and early promotional promises are the push up bra of video game sales. Thought they were mighty Ds but they were really squooshed Bs. But, like any fisherman knows, using the right bait gains better results.

Does digital copying somehow magically not work, only when it comes to games? So if you don't preorder, you might not get one?? Harsh, but needs to be read by some people out there, for all our sakes.

Considering a few retailers give discounts on pre-orders... Why wouldn't you? Used Games don't depreciate that fast.

LOL.

If they hadn't disappeared and just explained themselves this would have never happened.

I hope those that bought the game pre-/day1 will get wise, because developers will continue to float this line of lies, 1/2 truths, and 1/2 finished games as long as they have our money before we know what we are getting.

Just say no to pre-orders.

I agree for the most part, but I believe there are some situations where it's beneficial. The only game I've ever pre-ordered is GTA V for PC. There are a few reasons for this.

1) I had played it a bit on console (borrowed from a friend) and already knew I wanted a PC version
2) It came with over $1,000,000 of in-game money for the online portion
3) I was able to pre-load it before actual release, having it ready to play when it did. It's a bit of a download and install process given the size, so that was convenient.

Discounting may be another reason for some, but with PC games, it usually doesn't take too long after launch to see a decent price drop. So I just wait for that.

Should anyone have pre-ordered No Man's Sky? I believe not, given the situation. A guy I work with was talking about it a couple of days before launch, and I said "It sounds interesting, but I'll wait and see if they actually execute on what they're marketing it as." They did not.
