Well of course, you have to choose the right product for the application. My two 10k rpm velociraptor HDD's aren't exactly cool or quiet compared to even a 7200rpm drive, let alone a 5400, yet the SSD is faster as well by an order of magnitude. A more power hungry SSD will also blow away my bx100 as well.

Faster speeds generally cost more power in the same type of product, this is nothing new. Even the slowest SSD's are faster than the fastest HDD's and sip power in comparison.

2TB, 2.5", 7mm thick , often on sale for 70-75 dollars each. They use more power than some SSDs, but not enough to matter, and eight of them in a completely unventilated enclosure (an 8-bay IcyDock that slides into a 5.25" drive bay, with the vents taped off, as they get too cold with air flow) never get more than 10C over ambient on the hottest drive. They are also almost completely silent. Despite being 5400rpm laptop drives, they have very respectable sequential performance because of the high areal density (I'm not certain if they are two 1TB platters or a single 2TB platters); ~125MB/s near the beginning and ~70 near the end.

2.5" notebook drives, being smaller and made for mobile systems, also handle shocks a lot better than 3.5" drives. In the last 7 years the failure rate of my mobile drives has been about a third of that of my desktop drives (I've lost more 3.5" drives despite having more than twice as many 2.5" ones).

Still going to be a while before I can get 2TBs SSDs for 75 bucks.

Always thought chipsets had additional lanes, for instance z170 has 20 in addition to the 16 that the CPU uses that are dedicated to graphics, same goes for x99 but it has 40 lanes for video cards and uses pcie 2.0 on the chipset I believe. See picture.

They do, and they are fine when stuff connected to the chipset needs, and is allowed to, talk to other things attached directly to the chipset.

However, the chipset itself is connected to the CPU with what is essentially a 4x bundle of PCI-E lanes and that is a major bottleneck in some scenarios. Even if you could attach 20x PCI-E 3.0 lanes of SSDs to a Z170, you'd only be able to read from them or write to them at a bit under the peak bandwidth of 4x PCI-E 3.0, because that's what DMI 3.0 is.

I have mid tower that supports 8 standard HDDs, or 2.5'' ones, or 12 SSDs. There are adapters that allow using two 2.5'' drives in one DVD-RW bay. I found it's easier simply remove a HDD used for archival from case, and plug in new one. SATA can be hotpluged, thus it's just mater of grabbing the tray and sliding new HDD into the slot.

Of course PSU can typically output relatively few watts on 5V line. And even my RIV BE can use only 10 SATA HDDs simultaneously without additional PCI-E card. Thus 8+ HDDs are mostly for people who are able to make theirs own custom HDD's cages, and willing to daisy chain PSUs.

Majority of normal people are simply using NAT when they don't have space in theirs PC. Or, they are trying to use external USB 3.0 HDDs, and screaming murder when they will not start from USB 2.0, because it's the same connector right?
