Is it still a pain to get the M.2 to be a bootable drive for a lot of Mobos?

Why do you say that, Unless the Mobo is designed making the interface in a bad location it isn't that hard to work around. I found the easiest on my Sabertooth was to shutdown, Lay pc on its side then remove the screw, then place a plastic (visine) bottle on it to hold it in place.
Then I rebooted ran my secure erase, when prompted I removed then card, then plugged it back in replaced the visine bottle rebooted to finalize the operation and done. Shutdown replace screw put all back together and reboot.

Getting GPT is more troublesome, yet i figured that out as well.

The z97 and older x99 chipsets need a uefi bios flash just go to your manufacturers website and download it onto a usb drive. Theres also a setting within the bios to enable a uefi only under some sub setting depending on which manufacturer your board is. I haven't done it myself but did a quick search on it to help someone out in a different thread.
