NAS vs Upgrade Server Storage??? What is the better choice?

Thread Starter
I need to upgrade my storage on my server. 1TB spinner is getting full quick. I have 2 options to go with.

a) upgrade the server case, psu, and add a 2tb hard drive. put the 2tb in lvm with the 1tb giving me 3tb of storage. also add a dvd drive to the new case. total cost 240 bucks at newegg.

option a is due to the fact that the case I have my server in is mini itx and has space for 2 2.5" drives, both full slots as of right now. would need upgrade everything except the cpu, mobo, and ram.

b) buy a Synology NAS and a 3tb drive. put it in the networking cabinet and mount it via nfs to the server. dedicate the 1tb spinner to dvr duties (mythtv-backend). total cost 200 bucks at newegg.

I've never used network storage before as my computers are all laptops, on the move. my laptop is wired currently but I unplug quite often. I simply don't have experience with how reliable the nfs mount over the network would be, and as my server is serving 2 ltsp media center clients would it be ok to sshfs the mounted nfs share out to the ltsp clients? Would I have a problem with performance?

Without getting into too much. You have no redundancy in your storage, and Wifi isn't really suitable for a storage network.

The nas > the server would be wired. As media centers are pxe booted they are also wired. Only things wireless are the laptops. I do keep a USB hard drive with everything on it as a backup. Just asking if I can rely on the NFS or if I should put it all in the one box and avoid the remote storage.

Unless your data means nothing to you, you should be looking into redundancy. FreeNAS, unRAID, or something like a multi-disk AIO NAS from Synology or the like. If there's a foreseeable hard limit on how much data you'll be storing and you don't need the flexibility go with the AIO. Otherwise dump the funding into the server.

A USB drive as a backup isn't exactly a great choice. You're still prone to bit rot, and then of course theres the fact its a usb drive.

You're likely going to want at least 3 HDD's to make at least some redundancy. If you're going to make a server it is really worthwhile to do it right.

imo for you just get a synology device. also not the single bay, minimum a 2 bay for a raid 1 set up. may cost more but unless you want to pull a linus you are doing it half way.

So 2 or 4 bay nas with a 2-3 tb drives in raid 1. I can do that. I'll use the 1tb in my little htpc / server now just for mythtv dvr recordings. couldn't care less if I lose those. don't want to rip the movies again though.

After trolling Newegg for a bit it seems cost is comparable to get a NAS with a pair of drives vs upgrading the case / psu / and drives on server and doing software raid 1 or possibly even zfs raidz. Will go for the server upgrade in order to keep everything in one place.
