We of course had learning curves whenever anything was upgraded. Lessons were not learned...

 

The Network is one thing but when speccing this out, the servers need to be able to handle that throughput. We had 10gig on Core Routers, and to SAN as well but that was not the problem.

 

Even at 1GB NIC speeds our Creative department with those multi-GB files pulling and pushing to File servers would saturate their local network closets and respective uplinks to the Corporate Core Routers, not to mention frequently saturating the Windows File Server Cluster causing hangs and failovers. Finally we ended up with a Tech that knew what he was doing and designed it from "end to end" including the Server Cluster to handle the bandwidth of the users simultaneous traffic. Dept of 100+

 

It had to be sized for 20% of the department to typically be pulling or pushing files. That worked like a charm. A killer in IT is technology areas (linux, Wintel server, Network, storage etc)...only concentrating on their technology instead of the end to end solution so bottlenecks are removed. The headaches lol.

 

P.S. I came to hate MAC users connected to Windows Servers and the cludgy mechanics especially when upgrading the Domain Forests to the next windows rev.

alot of the 1/2 million $ houses around in my area ( I do not live in those, lol) Ive done alot of install work there back when I was doing residential / commercial TWC cable installs... Alot of those people had cat6 installed there and never used them, I'm super glad this is finally coming out, however most the people wont use it besides us at OCN I feel lol

Of course it will be new routers, switches, and adapters.... It would be like asking Intel to upgrade Haswell to Skylake via firmware update.

To support the high throughtput and be reasonable cost, you will need new ASICs. They have to implement higher clocks, add additional protocol standards, and tighten up tolerances. You can't do that through a firmware update.

I don't get the ooooo and ahhhh on this. (no, I didn't read the article this time)
Cat5e and cat6 are already 10gbps capable.

Why cut it down? It is the embedded/addon NIC's and switches are the main issues.

This seems like throwing in the towel on 10 Gbps, weren't we supposed to be able to do 10 Gbps over CAT6 by now?

I have a dedicated 20 Gbps link to my SAN and it seems fast enough, even 10 Gbps would be enough for me for now, but slower than that and the network goes back to being the bottleneck. It will only get worse in the near future. mad.gif

Cat 6, Cat 6A and Cat 7 all do 10 Gbps. This is only useful for large installations of Cat5e - think hundreds of feet and hundreds of cables. 10GBE switches are hard enough to come by, just imagine the availaibility of these 5 Gigabit switches.

Perhaps future 10GBE switches might have this feature?

They don't actually do it very well though, run lengths are pretty short for 10GbE over Cat6. There is actually a reason this has taken so long and is still power hungry and relatively expensive; 10Gbps over copper twisted pair is hard to do and and actually requires everything to be in spec.

You have a good point though, being able to drop back to 5Gbps, or even 2.5 Gbps, on substandard cables would be a nice benefit for sites that cannot afford installing fiber everywhere. I don't like the idea of installing new Cat 7 or 8 though, use OM3 fiber instead. tongue.gif

Does anyone have a link for a decent switch with 4 ports or more of 10Gbps SFP+ for less than $1000? poke.gif
