Quick review of BenQ Zowie XL2735 Monitor - Page 5

Oh wow, I tried to lower the contrast to 0 and now most of the ghosting is gone. It looks awesome with the Ufo Test, and it seems like I don't really mind low contrast. That was just a quick test though, I will have more time later this day.

I noticed some weird stuttering in Banished, have to look at that later too. I will calibrate the monitor to try to compensate for the lack of contrast, maybe that helps.

If the service menu is to be believed on the first page.

But Simon the reviewer at Tftcentral said "M27... is an AUO panel specification. I have no idea what panel this is or if it has the same inversion artifacts or the same "hey let's die a blurry death" issue the ROG Swift and XL2730 both had. Vega, you had both of those panels. You knew they were the same panel, the only differences were bezel sizes to accommodate Asus' housing vs Benq's--otherwise they were identical !

I just need those 60hz VT Tweak and 85hz VT tweak strobe tests.
Remember guys if you use VT 1825 (remember to go lower at 60hz if it doesn't work) PLEASE Test it with changing AREA AND INTENSITY in testUFO to see if its 1) single strobing, 2) if adjustments are working or "frozen".

For reference, Single Strobe off WITH vertical tweaks applied LOWER THAN 100HZ on the XL2720Z, would use these settings and ignore custom "strobe duty" and "strobe phase" settings:
Strobe Duty (intensity)=020
Strobe Phase (Area)=040

If a VT Tweak were NOT used at 60hz and 85hz, monitor double strobes.

Turning on single strobe would make custom duty/phase adjustments work.

Single strobe on/off was ignored at 100hz+.

They're important if I'm going to blow $600+ on this monitor, when it doesn't even have freesync!
Please test !

Hammelgammler what settings have you found to work better than the default ones? Could you please share those?
I got this monitor last week and am pretty happy with the quality, but the picture seems too bright on defaults and I am pretty new with monitor tweaking.
I can hardly find any information on any forums so far (there's not even official driver download on Benqs site yet) so any info will be much appreciated.
Thanks!

So to start of with the good things. I got it to work with 1849 Vertical. 1825 was the limit because of the 2720 Horizontal Total pixels. I changed that to 2652. Everything higher then 1849 and there's Crosstalk again, so it doesn't seem to work with more, even though it theoretically could go higher.

Together with a Contrast Setting of 7, there's very little visible Crosstalk and Ghosting. To be honest, I have no real comparison to a real CRT, but I would imagine it won't look that much different. I was about to send the monitor back, but it's amazing right now! I calibrated it to compensate the Contrast Setting, and it looks really not too shabby.

Then to make everything even better, you can use Area 0. As far as I know that means that there's no additional lag because of the Blur Reduction! Great! Nevermind, just saw that Area 100 is the Settings where you have lower lag. But maybe they changed it again? Because at Area 0, I would have "no" Crosstalk at the top, and a lot at the bottom. Native 120Hz with very very little Ghosting and Crosstalk. Maybe I'm a little bit hyped right now, as it seems like I finally found a decent monitor for Overwatch, but trust me it's great.

I will use it in most of the games I play with Fast Sync, as I don't see a point in getting a 120/144Hz Monitor and get 80 FPS with it. I want >Refresh Rate FPS! I think that's the optimal experience, and if you don't get enough FPS, then turn the settings down. If it can show 120 frames per second, it should get them. thumb.gif

I will test the other things later as well. Sorry for the delay Falkentyne.

Nice.
Your monitor is basically IDENTICAL to my XL2720z now, except you are at 2560x1440 and I'm at 1920x1080, and your max vertical total is 1825/1849. Mine is 1502.
Mine goes "out of range" at VT 1503, while yours probably drops the custom resolution and reverts to default timings because the VT exceeds the specification far too much.

I would order this monitor RIGHT NOW, but the 60hz and 85hz strobe tests with and WITHOUT the VT 1825 tweak are ESSENTIAL for me, because that's a deal breaker.
That's why I'm so persistent. if im going to blow $700 on a monitor I need to know if it can single strobe

Guys remember if you own this monitor, please.

Test 60hz blur reduction, with DEFAULT timings first. in Test UFO/alien invasion. It should have a DOUBLE image--that's double strobe. double strobe is bad smile.gif
And if you have time test 85hz (Automatic timings) also; 85hz needs to be entered as a custom res/refresh.

Then change the vertical total at 60hz to whatever works. 1825 or lower vertical total. Check if it starts single strobing. the CLEAR giveaway is you will get a LOT of flickering, but testUFO should now be MUCH better--NO double image at all. THEN try changing AREA and INTENSITY in the service menu.

If they have NO EFFECT at 60hz and at 85hz with vertical total 1825 (or a lower VT at 60hz), then that's a deal breaker--can't buy the monitor
If changing area and intensity DO work at 60hz and 85hz with a high vertical total--then the monitor is worth buying.

Unfortunately for console games who are using 60hz, you can't use VT tweaks on consoles frown.gif

@Falkentyne

Sorry, but it seems like everything below 100Hz will double strobe. I tried a few VT like 1725 and 1825, but it doesn't single strobe.

I also found out that I can further reduce Ghosting when changing the Overdrive Setting in the Service Menue/Factory Menue (the blue one), but sadly it doesn't get saved. Does anyone know if there's a way that it does? AMA High equals a value of 0x65 (hexadecimal), and it was less Ghosting with 0x50.

Area 100 works also just fine for me with a VT of 1849. So I will gladly take that one frame less lag. thumb.gif

Ok thank you. I'll try to contact Chief Blur Buster about this!

60hz strobing is important to me and its even more important at 1440p, which is much harder to drive than 1080p.

I can't buy this monitor until I get some type of proof that Benq can address this with a firmware update and that the end user can flash it with the RT809f flasher.
Being able to strobe at 85hz is also important in case I can't maintain 100 fps/100hz.

Thank you for the help, guys. If this monitor had freesync, I would probably grab it. And it's good that VT tweaks DO work and there are extra AMA settings.
Sorry for spamming so much.

It will be interesting to compare this display right next to the 24" mighty 1440p Dell tomorrow.

Hmm, no one is testing to lower crosstalk at 144 Hz strobe?

So, messing with vertical total's I just don't get an out of range error and escape and all is good. I get a hard lock of my computer and only the reset button and reboot back into windows with the BenQ unplugged, using my Dell monitor next to it use CRU.exe. to reset 64, and then the BenQ will work again without locking my computer. I have to do that entire sequence every time I want to test a new VT.

The starting points for HT and VT are also completely different based off refresh rate, so that also must be specified.

EDIT: the max VT I've found for 144 Hz is 1562. Doesn't really seem to do anything for the cross-talk though.
