GTX 970 to GTX 1070?

Thread Starter
I have about $350 to upgrade my friends video card for his birthday. He currently has a GTX 970. Would going from that to a 1070 be a big upgrade or more of a side grade?

big!

1 x 1070 is almost as good as 2 x 970's in SLI. 1 card usually the smarter option. Sell the 970 while he can still get a decent price for it and upgrade to 1070. Or if you can find a very cheap one just get a second 970 and try that out. 2 x 970 is ok for 1080p and 1440p but has all the SLI issues. above 1440p is a stretch for SLI 970's.

A GTX 1070 would be similar to GTX970 SLI.

It is like you upgrade from 970 to 980Ti performances.

Stock vs Stock, 1070 slightly better.
Overall GTX 980TI/1070 still pretty much same performances level.

However 980Ti seems does have better silicon for overclocking.
1070 have extra 2Gigs of VRAM, less power, and probably has better DX12 Async Compute and dynamic Preemption Performances.

I did this upgrade and it was a very nice one. The 1070 should last a good while, especially with the 8gb vram.
