Best air cpu cooler with aftermarket fan.

Thread Starter
I change my motherboard and cpu (i7 6700k) and because my old dark rock pro c1 is a pain in the ass to mount (last time i mounted it i needed 2 ppl to do it) and supposedly the 6700k is a very hot cpu i need to upgrade my cpu coller and i don't want an aio one (i like air cooling).

Generally dual tower cooler are with 140mm fan but from what i heard 120mm fan with higher performing static pressure should be better. The plan is to buy a cpu cooler, put 2 120mm fan (like the new ml120 from corsair) and put the 140mm in exhaust like in the top of my case (i'm waiting for the corsair air 740).

I read Phanteks PH-TC14PE and the nhd-15 are very good performer (but it's not like i know all the cpu cooler). On some you can put 3 fan is this useful and in that case do i still have the space to put the radiator and fan of my fury X.

Hi there

I would go with Noctua NH-D15 if you can or would be able to fit

Running this CPU cooler on my 5820k with 4.5GHz OC

Regarding running three fans, not sure, running 2 fans and temps are very good on mine 5820k,at 4.5GHz I'm hitting 62-65°C in rendering,my previous H100i could cope with 4.5GHz but my temps has been in 80's during the rendering..

If you will go with NH-D15 or PH-TC14PE ,then I would leave fans as they're,they perform very nicely on those coolers and downgrading fans for ML its simply in my view wrong and bit pointless

I'm sure doyll will be here shortly and would say something on that there

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Hi
I am running my Noctua D14 with 2 14mm fans which helped me reduce the idle temps by a couple of degrees. Thermalright's SilverArrow is among the contenders but I haven't tested it myself. The NH-D15 would be my choice.

Will try delid but just not right now (would really hurt if i damage it in the process) will try with one of those specialized tool to do it (like https://www.entersetup.com/ or http://rockitcool.myshopify.com/pages/using-the-rockit-88). Don't want to take a gamble with the vise method or the razor blade one. Maybe i will wait for kaby lake to try it, if i fail and ruin my cpu i would then upgrade to kaby lake. Oh god i wish i knew some sort of legitimate shop you would pay like 50/100 euro to do it tongue.gif

Right now i'll just stick to more conventional mean like better cpu cooler and case fan.

And for the ml why do you call that downgrading according to thermalbench review (maybe they are wrong i don't know) they are like a definite upgrade (and not that expensive in twin pack where i live)

If you're serious about paying someone to delid, check out Silicon Lottery. International shipping is a bit expensive, but the option exists.

As for cooling, the Noctua NH-D15, Phanteks PH-TC14PE & Thermalright Silver Arrow are all good options assuming they'll fit in your case. Which one you should choose largely depends on local pricing, availability & aesthetics (assuming a windowed case). From what I've seen, adding a 3rd fan to any of them has very minimal benefit, & wouldn't be worth the extra cost. I can't speak from personal experience, but I don't see how swapping the 140mm fans on these to 120mm fans would be beneficial.

Edit: Just noticed the question about your Fury X AIO radiator. It will vary depending on motherboard, but you likely will have space for the radiator and fan in the exhaust location (behind the air cooler), but not if you add a 3rd fan to the cooler. Here's a picture of my system with the PH-TC14PE installed. For reference, the case is a Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, & the motherboard is a Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z170.

That said, it's not an ideal setup. If the hoses are long enough & there is another decent fan mounting location available, you'd be better off with your GPU radiator elsewhere. With both in line, you're going to limit airflow through your air cooler somewhat & simultaneously feed warmer air into your GPU radiator. I should still work, just not as well as either in isolation.

What case do you have right now?

Regarding the fans, that's personal views there,I know on some heatsinks is beneficial swap fans for better, but on NH-D15 or PH-TC14PE you shouldn't swap fans for smaller 120mm fans as this will not result in better temps,140mm fans usually flows more than 120 fans and they're usually quieter at same RPM as 120RPM and flows more

I've tried on mine NH-D15 Thermalright TY-147A which are very good and quieter fans and in my case I've with them bit better temps, which I shouldn't have as supplied D15 fans are bit better fans

And regarding the deliding have look on Der8auer Delid-Die-Mate

https://www.caseking.de/der8auer-delid-die-mate-fsd8-015.html

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Some people think delidding is the only way to go. It's not.
i7 6700K don't gain as much from delidding as other chips. Sure some people make rash claims of huge drops in temps, but these are usually temperature changes accompanied by cooler changes, case fan changes, no accurate temperature baseline temperature monitoring, etc. A good air cooler in a case setup to flow properly will do very well.

I haven't Oc'ed my 6700 yet simply because it's so fans Oc'ing won't make a significant difference with the functions I'm doing. But I can say it is not a high heat CPU .. and I know what heat is. I have an i7 920, 980 & 980X in use here too. the 920 is Oc'ed to 4.4GHz under a PH-TC14PE maxing at 74c in 23c room. If I change fans to TY-143 (2500rpm 140cfm) temps are 66c, but I can't deal with the noise. biggrin.gif

For grins I put a TRUE Spirit 140 Power on it with 2x TY-143 fans and peaked at 68c .. same as a mate got when he tested his.

Moral of the story is a good single tower cooler is all that is needed .. and good case airflow. biggrin.gif

D15 is one of the best for sure. But the key words are 'one of the best'. There are at last a dozen just as good. wink.gif

Hey, Doyll, I have a question. My friend wants to delid his i5-4460 for lower temperatures. He's running the i5 (obviously), a Phanteks PH-TC12LS (told him to flip the fan so it's exhausting through the top), a Silverstone ML08B with the side panel removed because the cooler doesn't fit, and he's also using Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 Tri-Linear or some other crap by Arctic Silver. Should he do that or should he not?
