Yes base current Android is open source, but if GOOG decides to lock down Android O and beyond they are certainly allowed to do that. It would not be difficult to do. It's called proprietary software and companies do it all the time. I wonder how much of the code GOOG has licensed.

I think that if you own all the copyrights to the code base i.e. all contributors have given you (or your company as may be more likely) the copyrights to all of their contributions, then you can re-release that code base under a different licence (which may be a closed source one) if you choose. Some projects (like jQuery) release their code under two different licences simultaneously (one of which is the GPL).

This does not change the licence of any existing versions of the code though and when doing so you may find your contributors feeling quite upset, forking the project and continuing to develop it under a different name. Don't quote me on this but I think that was the kind of thing that has resulted in Libre Office vs. Open Office.

Companies wouldn't have to run stock Android, they could still throw their garbage skins on top, as long as timely updates are applied for two years on each device.

In reality Google should be handling all security updates for all phones. It wouldn't be that hard to implement either. While an OEM could handle OS updates, Google should be the one pushing security to these phones on a regular basis as they have those patches before anyone else, and a secure device is more important than new features.

The other thing I find disturbing is that Google will not allow Android pay on Router phones citing security concerns, yet you can still use your credit card on Google Play and a myriad of other services.

These (along with the other issues I've mentioned prior posts) are things that Google really needs to change to make Android an OS people flock to.

Each time good release a OS version they have to test all the features in order to get their version of Android to work. The thing is Android no get a Beta period. That should give the like of Samsung more than enough to implement their skin and maybe 1-2 months afterwards. Not 4-6 months.

I haven't been keeping up after the 1st set of announcements but they are still going to be pure Android right? Or with this whole Verizon partnership is scaring me about getting Verizon bloat... No one wants your NFL app, chat app, etc etc.

Bro, perhaps you should read this: (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/10/googles-iron-grip-on-android-controlling-open-source-by-any-means-necessary/)

It will give you some insight into why so many people don't bother with Android. And loved their blackberry/rim, or why many others find the iPhone/Apple ecosystem too constrictive. Which lead savvy phone users, looking for another option. Win10 phone are a hidden treasure and a prime choice, (since most are already running it on Xbox, or PC, laptop, tablet, etc) for those looking to graduate beyond past Android & Google's adware system...

Once you get a taste of Continuum, it is hard to look at another phone OS, without it.

Windows Phone has got a great OS. It's also got a barren app store and a limited device lineup which puts it in a poor position versus iOS and Android, respectively. Add to that MS's disjointed schizoid management of their mobile division and you get more could-have-been's than will-be's.

My back up phone is a MS Lumia 735 brah! When I sold my HTC M8 and was waiting for the new Nexus phone I got a 735 as a cheap stop gap.
If it wasn't for the fact that it was lacking in the apps department I would have gotten the 950XL over the 6P. Windows OS out of everything I've tried out is the best of both worlds. The freedom of Android (Freedom to me anyways) with the simplicity of iOS. Just wish it would get a little bit more love from the apps community.

talking about youtube? I'll give you a tip if you don't want to purchase into youtube red.
~ open up the video you want to watch
~ skip to the end right away when the video opens so it ask you "Back, Replay, Froward"
~ now hit your home button to go to your home screen and in your notifications you should have youtube play symbol
~ pull down your notification drop down and and hit the replay button for your youtube
And there you go, you can listen to the video you wanted to watch and surf the web at the same time AND you can even turn off the screen and have the audio keep on playing.

Couldn't say the same about their apps, from both devs and users' perspective.
