[The Verge] Pixel ‘phone by Google’ announced - Page 9

Is google just really hoping that everyone is using (their) cloud services? Seems like 64GB should be minimum storage on any new flagship type phones from here on out, especially if it doesn't have a storage upgrade slot.

Glad HTC got the contract to manufacture this phone. Huawei was offered the contract but declined since they wanted their logo on it. I still believe my HTC 10 is the best phone of 2016, only issue is the display with a pinkish tint.

Audio is fantastic with a dedicated DAC and amp.

I love my HTC 10 as well, but it just sucks that HTC moved away from dual front facing speakers. I do like the design of the phone so it is nice to see the new Pixel phones take the same body as the HTC 10 has, but it seems weird to remove the hardware buttons and not shrink the section those buttons were located at, or at least use it for something else, such as a front facing speaker...

Google is against touch buttons and SD cards. That is why you won't see those features on any new Nexus/Google designed phone. The two front facing speakers on my M9 were louder but they were as clear as the new HTC 10.

Really having a tough time swallowing the $650 price tag on this...and agreed if there are only 2x storage options (and no removable) then the min should be 64GB

I was waiting for this thing since my Nexus 5 broke and the 5X hardly seemed worth it....now I'm thinking I'll just get a 5X on the cheap maybe....

At this price point, it looks like "just another Android flagship" to me. Boring.

Why would you do this Google? $649 (before tax) for the smallest screen, lowest storage (32GB) version? The 32GB Nexus 5X launched at $430, but much cheaper now.

I paid $550 for my 64GB Nexus 6P at launch, and I don't see how either of the Pixel phones is a step up. Ok, a slightly better camera, but that's it. What warrants such a huge jump in price? You can even get the 128GB N6P on Amazon right now for $599, which is still cheaper than the lowest Pixel model. I know they're going for "premium flagship" status, but raising the cost like that doesn't make it so.

I'll definitely be sticking with my N6P for a good while, as I had planned anyway. I just hope Google learns from this for future iterations.

I find that odd as well. Perhaps they are intentionally downclocking for even better power savings? or last minute change to 821 and someone dropped the ball in QA of website.

Expandable storage, you can root and ROM it, the camera is solid, and it has a headphone jack. It's also 200 less than the Pixel or iPhone.

Google Pixel = 900 CAD (google store), and offers insurance. HTC 10 is 1000 CAD, EXCEPT insurance doesn't fly in canada!

"Worry free coverage for your phone with UH OH Protection, EXCLUSIVE for HTC.com purchases of HTC 10" from http://www.htc.com/ca/go/buy-htc-10 once your item is in the cart, but... http://mobilesyrup.com/2016/04/19/canadian-htc-10s-do-not-come-with-the-companys-uh-oh-protection-plan/

Also, the unlimited photo and video storage (4k!) is a huge bonus, and will save me 120$ / year, as I can cancel my Dropbox Pro subscription.

You can't just release a direct iPhone competitor and sell it at Apple prices without including much of anything that makes it actually worth that kind of a premium price...

No dog in this fight as i'm platform agnostic with both a Note 7 and 7 Plus, but seriously...going up against Apple by taking the 'sole manufacturer of the hardware and OS supply chain' approach only works when you:

- have brick and mortar stores globally with world class support
- aren't competing with a bunch of other manufacturers on your own platform
- have an established relationship with multiple carriers and financing options that make the phone more accessible
- don't release a premium product that is near double the cost of previous products without double the benefit

Let's be realistic...people who own a Nexus 5/6 or a Galaxy phone are NOT being wowed by the Pixel and are not likely to upgrade at this price point...and I don't see why anyone would.

Pros:

- Stock Android, but this isn't hard to achieve
- headphone jack
- battery

Cons:

- first gen product (it's likely not to be as efficient or fluid as is possible but by the time it is, will it be supported still?)
- no waterproofing
- no sd card slot
- no iris scanner
- no s pen
- no dual camera
- no 3d touch
- no software support after 2 years (a 4+ year old iPhone 5 is fully supported by iOS 10...***, Google...TWO freaking years of support, for a device that STARTS at $600+?! Unreal).
- no resell value (historically, Android phones don't come close to iPhones in terms of resale value)

I mean, the list goes on and on. I wanted to be blown away by Google with this phone, and they had EVERY opportunity to make waves with the Pixel...but...i'm just laughing instead because they literally just released the Amazon Fire Phone v2 (which is funny because they just 'poached' the Amazon exec to head up their mobile phone division...just...yikes).

TL;DR: Google: Hey! Use our new Google Assistant to make our neural network better! Also, upload all your photos to us (UNLIMITED STORAGE!) so we can get that data too in addition to everything else you use on the phone that we can legally mine for data! We're not offering anything new or mind-blowing with this phone compared to the competition but we'll charge you Apple pricing without the accompanying level of support! By the way, did we mention that Nexus LITERALLY died for THIS!

Sigh...

Google's Pixel phone vs 9 month old Win10 phone.. that is EOL about to be replaced in Feb...

Why get HTC 10 for $1000 when Note 7 is for $1050.
