Tom Peterson from Nvidia explains in a 20 min video @pcper that fast sync was made for use in fixed displays by way of high frame rates. In other words it works the way they intended it to when running the game at a FPS that exceeds your fixed refresh rate. He even mentions it's not recommended for low frame rates that match or are lower then your native refresh rate.

So far I have only used it on doom as I mentioned earlier and of course my frame rates exceed well over 140fps on my 60hz display and it works marvelously. With that being said I have not tried it on other games, especially considering that the next games in my que are quite demanding and I doubt I will be able to double my frames to my refresh rate.

I don't understand it works in the new Doom game, there is no screen tearing and my fps is fluctuating at 140-190

Also a whole bunch of people on various forums have reported fast-sync working in doom.

there tearing in doom, but it is not very visible as in other games.
here I see tearing with fast sync active.
anyway vsync on opengl games dont have much input lag, fast sync is no necessary.

Really, I wasn't aware that V-sync performed better in OpenGL

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that's confused with this.

The experience I had where I think the Vsync setting was actually using Fast Sync was when I was playing Witcher 3 at 4k with my GTX 1070. I was getting about 45 fps at high settings, but I experienced no tearing and little latency. This makes me think that fast sync was working in this case.

It makes sense what some of you have said about setting a cap causing judder, because that seems to be what I've experienced in the past. The only game where setting a cap hasn't caused a problem was the new Assassins Creed games. Because of how the AC games are animated, I find they actually look more fluid when you cap the FPS to 30. Whereas with Witcher 3, the 30 fps cap causes horrible judders, and I'd rather take the 45 fps than limit it to 30.
