7870 Overclock keeps reseting

Hi everyone,

Not sure what's going on with my 7870 lately. For years I've been running a modest overclock of 1125mhz gpu / 1325mhz on the memory, with the power up'd 20% in the AMD control panel. It's been perfectly stable for years. Card still runs fine, however lately, when I launch a game, MSI Afterburner shows stock clock speeds. If I pull up the AMD control panel, my overclock settings are in place. If I restart the computer, and launch a game, my overclock settings show up in MSI Afterburner. Not sure what's resetting it, or if maybe Afterburner is reporting wrong clock speeds.

This is an aging card, so I need every megahertz I can get out of it. Thanks!

Specs:

Windows 10 Pro 64bit
i7 3770k @4.6Ghz
Asus Maximus V Gene Matx Mobo
16gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133mhz
Samsung 256gb 850 Pro ssd's x2 Raid 0
WD Black 4tb storage drives Xx2
Corsair 850watt PSU

Thanks I will try that.

Seems the new drivers have screwed things up. Now when I use virtual super res, to go up to 1440p, after the games close, the icons on my 1080p desktop are all screwed up. That wasn't a problem before. More investigating I must do.

each time you reinstall drivers the Crimson OC resets, and also you dont have voltage control

in MSI AB you apply the clock for gpu/memory and voltages, fan speed then save the profile and select to startup with the saved profiles(below profiles numbers)

also overclocking a HD 7870(pitcairn) can oc easily to 1150 or even 1200MHz (some cards have high stock voltages) but still the vram will hold your performance back if you can upgrade a R9 380/X(25-35%) used for 140usd< or a r9 290(x) (60-50%) or r9 390 for 175usd< could be a good upgrade

if you prefer lower power consumption buy a rx 470 or rx 480 from jet.com

Maybe I lost the silicon lottery with this 7870, but I've never been able to get passed 1125mhz on the gpu.

Not too concerned about power consumption. Unless AMD comes out with something that wow's me (not likely) I'm gonna wait for the 1080ti to come out. As much as it pains me to say that, I've been on team red a long time.

well AMD will release Vega on 2017 Q1 or Q2 with HBM2, but if you will hold to buy a 1080Ti wait for the Vega GPUs to compare the performance

well in most reviews HD 7870 (pitcairn) can oc near 1.2GHz

So weird. I set my overclock in Afterburner, and it's still not sticking. I set a modest overclock, hit apply, then save to profile one. It worked for a little while, but then when I just relaunched Tomb Raider, it's back at default clock speeds. So annoying!!!

disable overdrive oc in crimson driver or reset to stock clocks
