problem with throttling down during stress

Thread Starter
Hello guys, i got new cpu today (fx8350) and for some reason my vcore voltage and core clock drops alot during prime 95 testing, from 1.35v to 0.85v and 4ghz to 1.8ghz which is absurd

Now i was told before that can be problem with motherboard not being able to push that much power or vrm or mosfets are overheating which is not case as its rated to 150w and my last CPU was using 145w without OC and didnt throttle down/lose power. While new cpu is noc OC and is running on 125w
( i also have small heatsinks on mosfets and 12cm cooler pushing air on them)

Also CPU isnt overheating its sits at ~50c on full load. motherboard ~40c

Steps that i tried already:
Disabling LLC
Checking in windows if power is set to high performance profile
Disabled Cool and quiet
Reset bios to defaults

Any kind of help will be great as im loosing my mind over this, got new CPU just to have it work like ****
thanks in advance!

From what you have there is pretty clear that the VRM throttling the CPU. I'd be surprised if it was something else tbh.

The 8350 consumes much more power than the 965 and thus stresses the VRMs harder. It's not just about heat, it's about whether or not they can deliver the power required.

Assuming you are measuring power via software which isn't a reliable measurement at all, I wouldn't look too much at that.

As far as fixing the problem, if it is indeed the VRM throttling, then the only solution would be a better motherboard since you've already done what you can to that one by adding heatsinks and a fan.

The psu he is using wouldn't be very VRM friendly- not the cleanest power . Also it has dual 12 volt rails rated at only 20 A each - I've had X6's pull more than that at 4.ghz .

I see that he is on windows 7 sp1, there were updates that made much better use of the 8 cores available.

Try using IBT AVX instead , some versions of prime 95 aren't Vishera friendly.

Make sure you have the latest bios .

Should be ok with that psu.

Are you still running win 7 sp 1? SP 1 would park cores etc , later service packs work better with the 8 cores.

Curious as to what batch number your 8350 is?

Most likely throttling while the board struggles to deliver power - but for everyday use you might be just fine - give it a try.

What do you ordinarily use your machine for? Normal users won't come across to many things that will load all 8 cores to 100% very often.

Even if you have to downclock/undervolt the 8350 it will be miles ahead of the 965.

Win 7 sp1 didnt know any other SP exist. but my cores are all unparked

Dont know how to check batch number

I still dont get it how motherboard struggle when its rated 150 and cpu is 125, my old cpu was 145 and didnt struggle. i just dont see logic, also on asus site 8350 is listed as supported CPU for my motherboard, i would understand that i might not be able to clock it but stock not working something is not right.
I use machine for gaming.

i would suggest updating bios and loading defaults and re-testing. also that mobo only has 4-pin power so may not be the best for power draw on 8-cores. hope you get this sorted soon
