We could knock off max 20% for a repeat purchaser and upto 10% for any watch over 5K GBP with the managers permission...If someone Amazon would come to the party they can purchase big volumes and rent over their market-place 1080, 1080T and Titan class...Pricing is illustrative...
The analogy doesn't help. This wouldn't be any sort of party for Amazon.
Think about the effort gone into making contracts and terms that must be placed into action in case a customer does not return a "rented" card. The warranty/rma issues due to misuse or other problems. On top of all this, at what price would the video cards need to be rented so that amazon can generate profit and not shaft the consumer all at once?
Titan XP $1200 for sale but would you rent this at $400 for year? Would it be realistic for a company to rent it at $200 a year which would take multiple years for it to generate the profit to cover the initial cost while factoring in next generation of video cards that force most to lose interest?
While the idea is fun to entertain as a consumer it just does not seem feasible.

For you, it would be renting. For the retailer, it would be a purchase. You got your money's worth, and so did the store. Some sucker who bought it from you second hand is the one shelving the product.

There are companies that already lease GPUs. The company I know of is "Cutting Edge Gamer." You can rent a GTX 1080 for around $80 per month.

And $80 a month is a little different from £80 a year.

The next Geforce series will be called 20x0 for sure just because of how people see bigger numbers as better performance and this is just part of marketing. Based on Nvidias history i don't think the next series will just be overclocked versions of the old GPUS. Nvidia has the GP100 with double precision cores and it will be the new titan based of the GP100 with only single precision core which will make it roughly 30 % faster than current titan x at a lower clock, a cut down 2080 Ti will come out to. A full GP102 will become the next GTX 2080 and will be released first, the performance will be slightly higher than Titan X. This is because Nvidia strategy shows that they want titan x owners to buy the 2080 first and then by the next titan GP100 later down the line. Similar to what happened with the 1080. The 1080 will become the next 2070.

The GP100 with only single precision cores will probably be made by Samsung 14nm process to cut down the size by a few % so it wont be a huge 610mm2 chip. Nvidia using Samsung was stated in a few articles http://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/nvidia-switches-to-samsung-14nm

The new GP100 is nvidias Ace card and it already exist in the DGX-1 and has been shipped to customers :

The question is when will the GP100 with single precision be released to consumers. The OP source is just bad speculation Nvidia is not going to overclock their 1080s and re brand them as 2080.

Then 2018 we will see Volta.

A GP100 with only single precision cores (and GDDR5X) is the GP102. I don't think Nvidia will design any new chips, like a bigger GP102, before Volta and HBM will still not be worth it on any GP10X gaming chip. This refresh has to be overclocked versions, maybe with small tweaks for clock speed, of GP104 and GP102 or it doesn't make any sense.

If the refresh includes faster memory there may be smaller changes like better ROP performance to take advantage of that.

The full chip Titan Black idea is quite nice. At $1200 its going to sell better than the XP just because its the only full chip in the 1000/2000 lineup. Scary how much the 1080 and 2080 are cut back. only 1/3 of the chip left really.

That's why I bought a Titan Black, full chip+end of a process+trouble with new proces=holds value. It covered 40% of the 1080 upgrade cost I did a while back. I doubt that same situation will occur again though.
