Can a software engineer chime in a explain why there NEEDS to a frame rate cap in some instances?

Not a software engineer, but I have messed around with games that did have frame rate caps.

 

It's because the physics engine is tied in with the frame rate. Try running just about any game above the frame rate cap and the physics either go crazy or run twice as fast or in the case of L.A. Noire, the facial animations don't sync with the audio.

I mean....do people forget that this happens with every other game release? This has been quite common even more so since the PS4/XB1 release, it seems. It's impressive how you manage to give two contradictory replies in the same post.


It's also impressive how you put everything in the same bag. There are many different problems with games and they should be pointed out every step of the way, want recent examples?

- Batman: Arkham Knight: a game released in such poor condition on the PC that the game was withdrawn from Steam for months in order to be patched and even then, multi GPU support was more or less 'unsupported' along the way;

- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: a short game that feels like the story was cut abruptly to make way for DLC expansions. Add to that the game has pay to win microtransactions (Some of them are single use! Want more? Buy again!) - in a single player game - in essence the cheat codes of yesterday are now merchandise. Also, it was supposed to be a DX 12 game, but only came with DX 11 at release, with Beta DX 12 released later. DX 12 final release was supposed to be on the 19th of September but it is still in Beta today, and there is still no mGPU support in DX 12 either;

- No Man's Sky: misleading PR for years in the printed media, on gaming sites, on YouTube and even TV shows, with Sony in the mix. Bugs were patched, but the developer is now gone missing and there are no news of the promised features to be added. PC patch is at 1.09 since September 23rd, but the developer didn't even bother to post a note on the Steam store page with anything newer than 1.07, made on Sept 2nd. Last tweet from developer is from Sept 23rd, pointing to a post made on their site two weeks prior.

- Ark: Survival Evolved: a game in Early Access that was, according to the developer on the store page, supposed to have been released in June. In September the game was not only not released, but gamers were faced with a $19.99 expansion pack that the dev said represents more the looks of the finished game when it comes out at the end of the year. And since the arks in the game are connected, people with the expansion can now go with their new animals and stuff into the base game and have an advantage, thus breaking the balance for those who only bought the base game.

Some gamers try to excuse them because they had to settle a lawsuit for an alleged $40 million. Point 1. We don't know what the settlement was for; 2. According to the same news they had to settle because they hired someone that they shouldn't have because of an anti competition agreement with the former employer; 3. None of those explanations or a call for extra funding came from the developer; no call for comprehension or an explanation for what was going on and why the time and money (which came from somewhere) was used to make a $19.99 expansion instead of finishing the game people paid for.



And now this. The game is out. If people just ate the 30 fps cap they wouldn't put up a note saying how important this issue is. If it was really that important they would have released it with at least 60 fps support or made a note days in advance, not a swiftly made post a few hours before global release in reaction to the criticism that merely points to a future post with more info on when to expect the patch.

But as I said, if people stayed quiet like you cynically pretend to be whilst coming here anyway with an ambivalent attitude, they wouldn't do anything. What is most annoying in all of this is that developers are constantly testing the waters to see if they can get away with this and the community has to constantly remind them that no.
