( hardocp ) seasonic flagship prime 850w power supply review

Thread Starter
I'm not sure it possible to overstate just how good the PRIME series is after seeing the PRIME 750W and now the PRIME 850W (OK, maybe the breakfast in bed thing mentioned the last time we saw a PRIME unit would be a bit overstating things if we used it today). However, what makes this more interesting is how Seasonic has done this by seemingly bucking some current trends. After the PRIME 750W review, some people may have questioned why Seasonic's new flagship product line is not a "digital" product like other companies have been pushing. That is certainly understandable as companies that sell "digital" units have had their marketing, their advertising, and their reps working over time to extol the virtues of "digital" power supplies the last couple years. Like any other case, when someone is trying that hard to tell you why you should buy something rather than just putting up ........

Am i a seasonic fan? Of course i am - used them for years thumb.gif

I wanted one to replace my X-850 since they have Titanium 80-Plus on a 650 W supply. But I don't pay for power, so I just went with the EVGA 550 G2 instead tongue.gif.

I think there are a good chance that it will last that much longer than a cheep unit so it might effectively cost the same as a cheep unit.

I am pretty sure more times than not people look for reviews rather than forum posts anyway..

The results are very impressive. Well done Seasonic thumb.gif

I'm curious as to how it handles significant overloads.

My Seasonic XP2 platinums seemed to have OCP that was slightly conservative per-rail, but too generous with overall-output. I've got two 860 XP2 samples that now make a hissing/whistling noise at high loads...which past experience tells me is likely to be a damaged primary capacitor slowly boiling off it's electrolyte.

Of course, I did have have to push more than 1100w (DC) though an 860w rated unity to cause this damage, so it's hardly Seasonic's fault. Still, I'd have liked OCP to kick in before any damage was done, not after.
