( hardocp ) seasonic flagship prime 850w power supply review - Page 2

Units just keep getting better and better.

This level of performance is essentially perfect. Other than more wattage, you cannot asking anything more from a PSU. And at 850 watts, this thing is more than capable of pushing a couple titans.

Added to my list of "parts to get some day".

My Seasonic XP2 platinums seemed to have OCP that was slightly conservative per-rail, but too generous with overall-output. I've got two 860 XP2 samples that now make a hissing/whistling noise at high loads...which past experience tells me is likely to be a damaged primary capacitor slowly boiling off it's electrolyte.

Of course, I did have have to push more than 1100w (DC) though an 860w rated unity to cause this damage, so it's hardly Seasonic's fault. Still, I'd have liked OCP to kick in before any damage was done, not after.
I have 3.32% iTHD. Practically whistle free. 860XP2=8.37% & 850TD=9.78%.

That is a bit heavy-handed indeed, especially when you can get Seasonic's x-1050 for around £150. I'm a fan of Seasonic PSU's but it's difficult to recommend even this unit to UK buyers when the excellent Super Flower Leadex range is priced to nearly half the Prime's sticker.

Seasonic certainly isn't perfect...my x750 rev2 had coil whine...exchanged it for a rev3 and very happy with it and it'll probably outlast all my other components.

am I the only one who doesn't get super excited over PSU?
I feel if one only stay at stock clocks or does a mild-moderate overclock then a standard 80Plus PSU will just be fine and you should save $$ for other components. The extra efficiency ratings probably only means very minimal cost savings per year?

Even a heavily OCed system will get by fine with a much less expensive PSU. These are so expensive because this level of efficiency is currently hard to achieve without cutting corners elsewhere. Prices will come down after a generation or two of titanium units.

Efficiency can be quite important for some and not just for electricity bills. Noise, system temp, heat dump/AC needs, etc, are all reduced as PSUs get more efficient. Even a few percent can be a big difference in scenarios that are constrained by any of these.

Of course, paying double or triple for half of already very good ripple (these have 10mV ripple on the +12v, which is incredible...but even 30-40mV wouldn't likely cause any problems for 99% of OCers) and 2-3% more efficiency is not something I'd recommend for most people.

I agree - but its the reliability I depend on , not so much in what I can save in the the electric dept. Not all my seasonic psu's have been plat, gold etc ..... But they have lasted, and my psu is like the heart of my system, and not any old heart / psu will do thumb.gif

its kinda of hard to justify the cost of the prime when platinum rated seasonic is like 90 bucks and less.

I agree, but those platinum power supplies were nearly that expensive at one point in time. Though the prices are exorbitant now, the prices will come down.

If I find myself with a lot of money further along my career I'll likely use a unit like this one for an amazing "dream build."
