Improving my wifi?

So i just moved to university, and im now running wireless instead of wired. im currently using a TP-link tl-wn821n, something i haven't used in years and im sure is possibly outdated. my connection to my router is fine, but i suffer from pretty frequent packet loss. is this "normal"? im pretty much 1 floor above the router, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue, but would getting a different wireless connector (be it usb, pci-e etc.) produce better results? if anybody knows any solution or can suggest a reasonably priced alternative, that would be great thumb.gif

From my experience in using a Router at a University, specifically in a dorm environment, packet loss is almost always an issue, as I had to deal with about 50 other people and their routers in the dorm.

Another thing, I am not familiar with the Dongle you listed, but after doing some searching, the reviews seem very positive for it. Unless it is damaged, I don't really think the dongle is an issue.

That being said, I think we need a bit more information.
- Are you in a large dorm environment/apt/etc?
- When scanning for WiFi networks, do you see a lot of other Access Points listed?
- What router are you using?

Cheers! smile.gif

I'm in a house, me and 2 others. i see a couple more access points, pretty sure these are the neighbours on either side. as for the router, its a netgear VMDG480. i don't think my dongle is damaged, but i have no comparison to make sure. it hasn't been used in about 3 years so anything could have happened.

In your case I would get a powerline adapter, it basically allows you to connect via ethernet using electrical wall sockets.
