Inconsistent PPD ??

Thread Starter
Hi there, I'm new to folding and this site. I've got everything setup and I'm trying to figure out the optimal setup for my rig. At first the PPD for my CPU/GPU were 2.6k/86k, respectively. After dumping the CPU slot, my PPD shot up to about 91k thumb.gif.

Now I've noticed I'm only at 31k PPD without having made a change on my end. The only thing I noticed was the WU was almost completed - is this typical behavior towards the end of a WU?

There are no errors/warnings in my log. Does the PPD# just fluctuate, or maybe they use the same algorithm Paragon uses for disk manager rolleyes.gif

PPD fluctuates, it depends on the WU you get.
You can check in the below thread if the PPD you are getting is consistent with what other people are getting for your graphics card.

Hi aBigRedBear,

First up, welcome to OCN grouphug.gif and to the folding section. There lots of very helpful folders here thumb.gif

As Wyllliam said, PPD will fluctuate as there are several different work unit and they all give different PPD redface.gif . You will also see that the PPD can also fluctuate within the work unit itself especially the first few frames.

That said, your PPD is on the low side for a GTX 970 but it looks like you have just started folding.
Do you have a passkey?, if not then get a passkey (allows for speed bonus) - need a valid email address
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

Enter your folding name (mine is the same as my OCN name) - which you have done
Enter your passkey
Enter Team OCN number - 37726 - which you have done

When you have successfully folded 10 WU on the passkey, you will be given a bonus for the successfully completed WU from there on.

"On the low side" rolleyes.gif

As soon as I entered a passkey my PPD shot up to 300k and climbing. I do believe that was why the numbers were so low, and now I've got a better understanding of the PPD as well. Thanks for the help guys!

No Problem.

Are you planning on overclocking it?

Yep, I OC my GPU on the fly for different purposes. I don't OC the CPU much now, but I don't have a need to either. I've gotten the CPU to 4.8 stable, but I've only saved a 4.5 OC (just a tad over the turbo) for the times that I feel the need to edit videos or photoshop family albums for an entire afternoon. The screenshot is the OC I found worked best with F@H, but I think I'd need to up the voltage to game with it. Again, I seldom have the need with a 1080p monitor. When I built this rig last year I wanted the ability to OC when I felt the urge to upgrade. Its been a year and I do OC more often now that last year. Hopefully I can squeeze another year out of the GPU and get a 1070/80 at a reasonable price biggrin.gif

Did you OC your 970?

Did you OC your 970?

Yes i did, i had it running at around 1520MHz.
It increased my PPD significantly biggrin.gif (up to 450k at some WU).
I just bought a gtx980TI to improve my PPD even more.
I hope to be running them both for the October Foldathlon.

I also used to OC my 3770 up to 4.8 GHz but i have it running now at a slow 4.5 GHz.
That one will be upgraded when intel decide to come out with the next generation processors.
