I've been running a trusty Radeon HD 6950 2GB since 2011 and I think it might be about time to finally upgrade...

I have a 60Hz 1440p monitor so I don't quite need 120-144 fps and I'm looking at the two midrange cards: RX 480 and the GTX 1060. I've been doing a bunch of reading and know the GTX 1070 is better choice for 1440p if I want to max games out. It's more than I would like to spend though, and I've been surviving playing on low settings with my 6950 so either of the midrange cards will be a huge step up for me. I want to play stuff like GTA V and BF1 with it (also Overwatch, but that's less taxing) and can handle playing on High (over Ultra).

The thing is I keep seeing differing opinions on which card is better. They do seem to trade blows but some reviews say the GTX 1060 is a bit faster, whereas others say that the RX 480 is better (it seems to be the case in DX12 atm). So I'm not really sure which one to go with and which reviews to believe. Is it worth getting the 8GB RX 480 over the 4GB one? And the 6GB 1060 over the 3GB one? For 1440p, my intuition says yes but benchmarks show only an improvement of a few frames with the higher RAM cards.

Which card would you go with for 1440p?

I wouldnt get the GTX1060 3gb. It does seem like the RX 480 4/8gb and GTX1060 6gb are basically tied for performance, so I'd get whichever is cheaper.

Another option is getting a refurbed R9 390 or 390X for similar performance

Thanks for the input

Good Luck!
My other option was to go for refurbed R9 390/390X/Fury when they pop up on Newegg.ca. It'll definitely give me more bang for the buck but not sure how I feel about getting a refurbed card yet.
