Hello all,

I am going to get a 1440p monitor @ 144hz http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/accessories/apd/210-agjr?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=210-AGJR
I'm pretty sure that's the monitor I want and it's going on a dell cc.

Now the questiion is, should I get the 1070 or 1080? I notice that the monitor has g-sync so it would still be smooth even if the fps do dip. Is it worth dropping $600+ on a 1080 now especially if the TI is close to coming out? The 1080 is only around 20fps more or so, correct?

Thanks for reading

I'd wait for the 1080 Ti. Even if it's out of your budget it might prompt some GTX 1080 sales? I have a GTX 1080 on a 1440p 144 Hz G-SYNC/ULMB monitor, and I want even more performance so I'd choose the fastest card which right now is the GTX 1080 after the Titan XP.

I read that the ti's are coming out early next year when ATI releases their next set of cards? I could be wrong. I don't really want to wait that long for just a a TI lol. So it's either the 1070 or the 1080 for me. Considering the 1080 is 20fps or so more than the 1070, is $170 worth it to you guys for 20ish more fps if you had a 144hz 1440p dsplay?

Then 1080 it is. So the real question is... which one? People love the EVGA FTW model; it looks beautiful and can fit into any PC due to its neutral colors + RGB LEDs, and cools well and is quiet. The cooler is the only factor that determines overclocking really (with the GTX 1080) along with luck.

Gigabyte G1 Gaming is a known coil whiner. Coil whine is possible on any but that one seems to have it the worst. Gigabyte XTREME Gaming seems good though, as does EVGA SC. I'd say the GTX 1080 is worth the premium over the 1070.

Don't get the EVGA ACX cards they have hotspots, they overheat and fail and are a fire hazard and are also the most prone to coil whine, ASUS Strix is a better product despite ASUS crappy customer support

I suggest the ASUS Strix, better quality and runs cooler, Gigabyte is not bad either if you can stand its looks, avoid EVGA this time, The Zotac AMP Extreme is also good, basically pick whatever you like based on looks and price, just avoid EVGA ...

Yes, i handled 4 Strix so far, 3 were almost silent and one has bad coil whine, any card can have coil whine but the Strix is the least affected, with EVGA you have the highest chance of getting a whiny card, most of the Strix don't have that whine due to high quality power phases, if you end up with a whiny card you can just replace it, but your chances with the Strix are better.

Depends on what reviews you are reading, i had the 1070 not the 1080, some had Samsung memory which were very stable, no crashing whatsoever but the latest batches came with Micron GDDR5 these are a mess and do crash.

The 1080 is another story, they all use Micron GDDR5X which are good, no problems with them, the crashing of the 1080 is common to all brands due to multiple drivers problems with Windows 10 anniversary edition .. driver situation is pretty messed up, crashing, flickering, artifacts .. a bunch of stuff, Nvidia is not fixing that fast enough but that is not a fault with the Strix itself ..

usually in Pascal Strix > Zotac AMP Extreme > MSI > Gigabyte > EVGA

Judging by quality and stability, cons for each:

Strix cons, card is pretty long, make sure you have space in your case, RGB LEDs do not have very accurate colors, like for example red is a little purple and you have no white, also fans have sleeve bearings as apposed to double-ball bearings on the EVGA and MSI Gaming.

Zotac AMP Extreme: triple slots card that sag badly after a while, many people report fan issues.

MSI: usual QC issues and very bad support.

Gigabyte looks ugly, it is an option if you don't mind the orange accent

EVGA heats up and catches fire sometimes

Choose your poison

If your worried about 600 for a 1080 keep in mind you going to have to pony up probably 1k+ for a TI whenever it does come.

If you want 1440p and high frames id look at the 1080, the 1070 isn't enough, unless your ok with dropping some settings they the 1070 would be just fine.
