I am going to be buying a 1440p 165hz monitor or 1440x3440 100hz and i was gonna wait for a 1080 TI to come out but i don't wanna wait anymore.
Iv been thinking about 1080 SLI, but at a cost of about 1400 dollars is it really worth it over 1070 SLI for around 800?
Im pretty sure both sli setups can run a 1440p 165hz screen or even 1440x3440 at 100hz. Is the 15-20% performance gain over 1070 SLI really worth the extra 600 dollars?
And from what iv seen both SLI setups beat out a 1200 dollar titan XP.
And from all the benchmarks iv been seeing only 1 out of many games had stuttering problems so im not worried about that.
If you're already willing to spend that kind of money on SLI and high end monitors, then there's no reason to settle for X70 tier GPUs. You obviously want top end stuff, so anything lesser would be a compromise.

1080 SLI.
If your even thinking about 1070 SLI youd be better off getting 980ti SLI since you can get them cheaper and they are faster once overclocked.
A single 1080 is already 20% faster than a 1070 to begin with. Starting with 1070's is going to limit you in every game that doesn't support or work well with SLI.
I would try out a single 1080 first, then decide weather to SLI. I think for the most part, it would do the job. I'm running BF1 Ultra on 3K resolutions with only one setting (SSAO) lowered from Ultra.
Either that, or just go for gold with the Titan XP that is a good 25% faster than the 1080, or 55-60% better than 1070. I personally hate crossfire and SLI, so I would just go Titan XP if I had that sort of budget.

That makes a lot of sense to buy a 1080 and see how it does then decide if i need another one. Im use to 290 Cf so SLI should be fine for me if i do get two. I was gonna buy the screen first but one of my 290's bricked along with coincidentally a 7870 in another pc last week. Bad month for stuff breaking i guess. Every AMD GPU i have bought over the last like 6 years has ended up bricking due to vram falling or black screens with no signal.
Not a thing the vendors have done can make them OC any better than the reference cards. So just buy whichever one you think looks nice and has decent cooling.
I ended up with a Zotac Amp because they came in stock for about 5 mins when 1080's were still hard to come by, and it turned out to be a good cooler and the cheapest 1080 at the time.
Wait 1 month if possible or don't: Purchase either EVGA GTX 980 TI classified x 2 or GTX 1080 ftw. Come 3 months, do a step up from that to 2x 1080 TIs. Profit.
I have a 980 TI classified myself and a S2417DG monitor, very happy w/ performance.
Nice, ya you all have convinced me to get a 1080 for now and one later if i really need the power. Was going to get a EVGA ftw, but seeing the thread about the VRMs hitting 108C makes me not want it. Now i need to deside what 1080 i wanna buy.
Been looking at the GIGABYTE extreme gaming card. Has a 4 year warranty.
1080s would hold their value better than titan XP aswell if you buy em and still decide to go 1080ti, or you could always go single 1080 and wait for ti.
1080 SLi given the choices. Note that SLi does not work in many latest games including:
- Forza Horizon 3
- Gears of War 4
- Mafia 3
- BF1
and quite possibly Titanfall 2

I voted 1080 sli. I however would probably just get a single titan xp and forget the sli option. I guess having a bad experience with it kind of burnt me.

Titans will always hold more value considering they are dual use cards (much faster FP64).
To clarify, I paid $1000 for each of my maxwell titans and just sold them for $800/ea.
980's are selling for ~$250 (~$550 back when they were sold new).
20% depreciation on the Titan X (maxwell)
45% depreciation on the 980
