Samsung is handing discounted smartphone upgrades to owners of the faulty Galaxy Note 7 in its home South Korean market, as the electronics company faces being sued in multiple countries over the device's tendency to catch fire and even explode.

The troubled electronics maker has offered to hand owners of the £739 Galaxy Note 7, which was discontinued a fortnight ago, a free upgrade to a Galaxy S7 smartphone as well as a half-price new phone a year later.

After one year, South Korean customers can upgrade to the forthcoming Galaxy S8 or Note 8 smartphone, at half the price of a Galaxy S7, which retails at £639.

In South Korea, 527 Note 7 owners have filed a lawsuit against Samsung, calling on the company to compensate them for the hazardous product, including the time spent on repairs and transferring their data to new phones.

It is unclear whether overseas customers will be offered similar perks. The debacle has already created a $5.4bn dent in Samsung's operating profits between now and March 2017, according to estimates by the company.

Basically, Note 7 owners in S. Korea will get either Edge or Non-Edge version of S7 as a replacement device. And next year, they will receive Note 8 with a half price by giving back their S7.

Seems a good deal to me.

Good to hear they didn't shelved Note series as well.

Nope, not a good deal at all. Here's the real breakdown:

1. You exchange your explosive note7 for a S7/S7 edge "rental" with a 2 year contract. The monthly bill includes a 24 month plan for the device cost. You only pay 12 months worth . The contract is mandatory in order for the exchange of note8.

2. Then you return that phone which you will have paid half its value for in exchange for a brand new note8.

3. You pay the promised 1/2 price of a note8.

So basically you're getting charged the whole cost for a note8 by staying loyal to Samsung.

This specific article didn't mention anything about payments and/or returns of the GS7/Edge for this deal. Is there a link for another article?

If you read the Android Authority article on this it gives a better picture. No where do they say that a 24 month plan is mandatory. They're talking about this deal as a handset only deal.

Note 7 owners will only have to pay half the price of their new Galaxy (S7/S7 Edge), which can be paid for over a 12 month installment plan, until they exchange (yet again) the replacement S7 for one of next year's flagships. At which point, customers pay the remaining balance up to the full cost of the Galaxy S8, which can be spread over another 12 months.

You do end up paying full price for the note 8 but at least instead of paying for the S7 plus paying for a new Galaxy flagship, whether it's the S8 or note 8, you will end up saving more money versus paying for 2 phones.
