The guy is extolling words of wisdom, for $30 you can reap some serious rewards here. Also, refurb 970 is like $190ish at microcenter right now if you have one anywhere near you.

That's usually how it works. Either way, I wouldn't want mismatched capacities. There's no benefit to running 24GB over 16GB so I'd just run 16GB.

Unfortunately that is not possible right now. I lost my job 2 months ago and yes I'm working now but my new jobs pay is alot lower and it's just barely cutting it.

A cpu cooler and new gpu are going to have to wait till I catch up

And to the users below I took out the 8gb and just running the 16gb in dual

Why make a thread about upgrading when you can't? To answer your question, the 2600K @ 4.4 GHz+ (easily achieved on most processors) will for the most part, keep up with intels 6K series running stock. You will need a 1080 to really bottleneck your CPU so a GPU upgrade should be a first. If you PSU can take it, a used 290X can still stretch it's legs and will run circles around a 660 and they are incredibly cheap. DX12 support seems better on old AMD cards then old Nvidia ones too.

Of course if you do get more money, a 1070 will be a great buy.

Ok and the reason I created this thread was to get opinions and options to know where to go next with it. I dotnp LAN on being in this spot for very long and i wanted to make sure when the time is right which will be soon enough that I'm not going to waste money on the 2600 if it's not worth it anymore.

I will grab a cpu cooler and see what i can do on a gpu. I'll look and see what used prices are going. If i have to I'll snag a credit card and charge it and just pay it off

New cooler is fine and all since you can carry it forward but I would not hold my breath for any meaningful OC with that board over the existing 3.8 turbo on the 2600K.

On a side I was looking in my bios and was wondering my my motherboard isn't reading my ram at 2133. Apparently my motherboard oy supports 10600 or 1333 so it's knocking my ram to 1333 and no real option to run it at 2133

So no matter what it's knocking my ram speed to 1333.

Can you tighten the timings? Lower latency would help almost as much as increased frequency.

As long as there is an equal amount of RAM on both channels it is nearly irrelevant.

according to bf1 cpu benchs, the stock 2600k is just a little behind the 6700.

your good for some time to come.
