After the initial wave of hype for smartwatches, it seems interest is beginning to wane with worldwide shipments down by 51.6%.
Total smartwatch sales for the third quarter of 2016 reached 2.7 million, down by over half from last year's 5.6 million sales, according to research by market analyst IDC, published on Monday.
Leading providers of smartwatch devices including Apple, Lenovo, and Pebble all saw considerable losses in the third quarter.
US tech company Garmin was a surprising exception, seeing a staggering 324.2% increase in growth, helped largely by its focus on fitness. This has further increased its market share to 20.5%, helping to close the gap on the 41.3% share held by Apple.
Seems about right. As a global product it enjoyed the initial hype and now people are seeing them for what they are. Having to buy and babysit and recharge yet another electronic device on a very regular basis is too much when many people simply stopped wearing watches altogether years ago and just use the phone to check the time and do everything else. Unless there is a specific purpose for specific occasions, like fitness, where it makes sense, smartwatches are just one impractical step too much and too close.
if they get cheap enough that's all i'll get one for, pedometer, time and and way to check for emergence pages while in class/yoga (without disruption).
Personally, I find absolutely no use for them.. why do I need a smartwatch when my phone is always an arms reach away?
They seem more like a fashion statement than anything else.

Dunno but this Samsung gear fit 2 is pretty convenient (I guess a fitness band with smart features) and hasn't blown off my hand yet. How many watches do people even buy? Anyways, fitness band with a clock on it is all that's really needed.
Well, people ask me why I wear an analog watch when I already have a smart phone. So, for people who don't find a watch to be useful, an analog or smart watch makes no difference in their view.
I never really saw the use for smart watches outside of sheer novelty. I almost picked up a pebble watch to do custom watch faces for it. Ended up not getting it because that would have been the only use I had for it.
I love my zenwatch 2. holds a charge for 3 days. it's been a habit of mine already to charge it once every 2 days before going to bed. can't live without it
Im not gonna buy a smartwatch that isnt a circle for starters, So apple is out the window, Only nice ones i have seen are the Motorola and new ASUS one.
Besides they typically have battery life that lasts less than a week, I want a month minimum.
I'm not a watch wearer, but if I decided to get a watch, the only reason I'd get a smart watch is so that it would say stuff like "It's Twelve Effing Thirty Mother Effer" (which I have seen before) or some other gimmicky way of telling the time.
I like my smartwatch, when ever im not at home, my phone is in my jacket or bag.
So its usefull to have notifications tick in on the watch, then i can see if its something I need to respond to or not, without grabbing my phone.
When I get home i just take it of and put in in the charger at my pc.

I can't say I'm that surprised, most smartwatches feel like they trying to be smart phones on your wrist with a whole bunch of unnecessary features. Other Issues like having to actively drive the back-light (aka wake up the device) to see the display totally goes against the convenience of a regular watch. I'm also not a fan of a watch with touch display.
I personally have a 1st gen Pebble and I love it, 5+ days of battery life, it feels more like a digital watch with smart features.

For people that are mature enough, let's say 25 or up, they get totally outclassed by traditional dress watches, especially in styles that are smart causal or above.

Good, never cared for the smartwatch bandwagon hype. I'll keep sticking with my classic Automatic self winding divers. Much more class and prestige than a gimmicky "PDA on a wrist" IMHO. Try getting lost at sea with a smartwatch.
