I was actually surprised to see this go onsale for Pre- Order. With a Touchscreen monitor no less. They must think they are Apple looking at the prices though lol. [edit] Like you guys have said Apple is not their competition. Wacom is.

Not sure what to think of it yet...I'm still processing this. Design wise however I think it's where they should be, and where Apple would have been had Jobs not passed away. Is Apple really flat out dropping the ball?

Turn Your Desk into a Studio

Surface Studio is an entirely new device designed for the creative process. Its roomy and adjustable 28-inch PixelSense Display provides a huge canvas for all kinds of work. Position it upright to sketch, paint, and edit photos, or lay it flat to draw on it like a drafting table. With Surface Studio, the possibilities are limitless.

Can you use actual Ss and not dollar signs($)? I mean, really...

It's an intriguing initial product. I'll give them that. No USB-C/TB3 is somewhat of a problem, but I would say this is sstill a pretty compelling product when placed next to an iMac.

As a rule of thumb... The 27" Retina iMac costs 3499$ with the i7,1 TB SSD, and 16 GB Ram. Also, since the Surface Studio uses Skylake we may see somesort of DDR4.

Intersting product, but 980M for $3K product is a major disappointed 2 month after 1080 laptop were released

There is no 1080 mobile but there is 1080 (laptop) and its important to distinguish the two since there are a lot of differences that the naming scheme are trying to spell out.

None the less disappointing as well

I just wish they went with a gunmetal color or black or dark gray or something else, something different from the typical Apple color instead of being a near mimic. Maybe even make it anodized too.

The mouse and keyboard are also Apple-like. Does MS not have any original thinkers on their design team? All Apple inspired accessories and color.

I have to say it looks absolutely beautiful, and the release time is masterfully done just a day before apple shows their new iMacs which are just going to get a revision but not such cool features.

TBH if I was the market right now for such a thing, I would definitely get it. If it performs well and the pen performance can rival the wacom tabs or the iPad pro, I might even consider trading my mac pro for something like that. For editing it looks amazing.

Hell, I kind of want it even with the time to build my own. That thing is pretty damn nice.
I'm right now drooling. Hmmm, wonder how it compares to a Wacom Cintiq.

I'm kind of thinking selling my 24HD Cintiq and get one of these later. Biggest thing is how sensitive is the screen and pressure levels the screen can do. Though, that looks way easier to deal with over my space eating Cintiq.

It's not really a product that fits into a niche that Apple has, they were working on touchscreen iMacs before and ended up canning it because they weren't comfortable to use for normal tasks.

The new Microsoft Surface Studio and the iMac are targeting two very different groups of people, the iMac is a consumer level all-in-one whereas the Surface Studio is targeted at working professionals.

For what the Surface Studio is, it's VERY expensive too, the entry level machine costs $2999 compared to the $1799 for the entry level 27" iMac.

For the price of the entry level Surface Studio you could get a 5K 27" iMac with double the RAM (8GB Surface vs 16GB iMac), faster storage (1TB hybrid drive Surface vs 512GB SSD iMac) and way better GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M 2GB Surface vs 4GB AMD Radeon R9 M395X iMac).

It's definitely an interesting machine but for consumer usage (and most professional usage) the iMac absolutely blows it out of the water on anything that doesn't explicitly use the touch/pen input.

Not sure I understand the complaints. This is not designed to compete with your desktop. Didn't you watch the video? They were drawing pretty much the whole time. And for what it's actually competing against, it's not unreasonably priced (depending on the performance).

LOL you cant play forza on this thing as its a buggy and downgraded mess as of recent

980 is so 2014, jeez this thing is so messed up, I mean i get silly things like this you pay over the top for but this is just dumb

The price of this is actually very reasonable if you consider that a Cintiq costs 2700$ without a computer that comes with it. Also the Cintiq has half the resolution and brightness, a gap between the screen and the surface of the glass where you're drawing, which this doesn't have etc.

The screen on this thing must be seriously expensive to produce.

For the record, this is their competition, not apple;

https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Cintiq-27QHD-DTK2700-DTK-2700/dp/B00R7QJBCS

The ergo stand is another $400. It is not a computer, just a monitor. This is the highest resolution/size they make.

The add was one of the best I have seen.

And here's someone who used both the 27 cintiq and the surface studio:

"Tycho asked me to compare it to my Cintiq, and I told him that drawing on the Cintiq now felt like drawing on a piece of dirty plexiglass hovering over a CRT monitor from 1997."
