With any version of the ps4 or xbox one you dont need to buy another piece of hardware. They are all self contained devices that can play all the games (for now). The way that add-on was described as working was you needed the switch and you needed the new dock/enhancer to function as 1 unit. Buying just the dock/enhancer would result in a paperweight, like buying the 32x or sega cd without a genesis. Every single add-on like that has been a commercial failure and there is no reason to think a new dock/enhancer would be any different.

I really cant think of a way they can sell the upgraded dock to millions of people who will have a Switch. People thought the Wii U gamepad was a add-on for the Wii. This will be a mess. The only way i can think of it, is coming out with a Switch 2.

That is the only chance it would have.

Now it doesn't surprise me they would be working on prototypes for whatevers next but I don't think that if this was a real device it would be related to the switch. Nintendo watched as Sega died because if add-ons, there is no way they would do the same.

As someone who bought the Sega CD and 32x back in the day I must say I would probably get a dock upgrade as well, LOL. If all it did was upscale the resolution and/or frame rate I don't see how it wouldn't be fairly easy to make all games compatible with both the original Switch and the Pro Dock Switch. I'm hoping it's true.

But then Nintendo has a long history of developing add-ons and never releasing them (at least outside Japan) like the Famicom Disk System, the N64 DD, the CD add on with Sony that fell through (and led to the original PlayStation), etc.

Hey don't worry I had both as well then went and got a Saturn and Dreamcast after that.

If all the device did was upscale I think it would be OK, it still wouldn't sell very well though. What would be dangerous is if they start designing games that would only be playable when it's in this upgraded dock. Regardless I think it would be a bad idea and probably best left to the next Nintendo device.

Saturn and Dreamcast were my babies! I've still got both lying around. Sega's fall is why I've tried to support Nintendo through the years despite their own brand of dirty pool. As a gamer kid it never sat well with me the way that Sony and Microsoft came in and pushed out the old stalwarts of my youth... though I'm sure a generation behind me, people felt the same about Sega and Nintendo versus Atari. :p

I don't think that this device needs yet another device to create even more segmentation. It's put itself in a very weird, but potentially successful niche. Trying to add another dimension addressing a weaker side of the console is just unnecessary distraction from the strengths that it does have, IMO.
