I am looking at buying some ram soon for a gaming rig I am building and am curious about the ram. New to PCs in general. I am eyeing some Corsair Dominator Platinum ram. The ram I am looking at is the part # CMD16GX4M4B2400C10 It is 16G of 4x4 ram, 2,400MHz with 10-12-12-28 timing at 1.35V. My first question is dose performance get affected by number of ram sticks? Is it better to have 2 large ram over 4 smaller ones? Will going larger to 32G add any performance in gaming? I also noticed that once I look above 2,400MHz on the Corsair web page the ram says for X99 platform and not X99 and Z170. Any one know why there 2,666+ ram is only advertised for the X99 platform? Is 1.35V too much for 2,400MHz ram, should I be looking at something with a 1.2V rating? I am sure I will be trying to over clock every thing on my MOBO even the ram.
My build is as follows --- Asus Z170 ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha MOBO --- LGA 1151 6,700K CPU --- No GPU yet but looking at either a GTX 1070 or 1080 to overclock --- NO ram yet --- will be running a Samsung 950 Pro 256 SSD M.2 for operating memory --- 2, 1TB HHD in raid 0 --- 850W gold Power supply and custom water loop.
From what I have read over clocking dose little for performance in gaming and 16G is plenty, but is it? Should I run different ram? Should I just run some stock 2133 at 1.2V at stock or run stock ram and over clock? As it goes not I plan on running the above ram, the Corsair 2,400 Platinum's as just looking at specs they look better than others I have looked at but being my first build and my first desk top to own I don't know how this is going to equate in to performance. Am I wasting money here cuz this stuff is a little on the pricey side. Will I get the same performance buying $100 sticks of ram?
