Hi, looking for tips on crimping male Molex Mini-Fit Jr (ATX) terminals on 16AWG wire. I purchased the wire and pins from Mainframe Customs and am using an Engineer PA-21 crimper. The female pins work fine, but 16 gauge wire seems like it is too big for the male pins. The wings on the male pins just seem to short. Any advice would be great.

Those terminals should work just fine I use them all the time on their 16AWG wire. I would suggest it is most likely the crimper you are using as it is probably not setup properly to crimp with 16AWG wire. I would try MAINFrame's Crimper as it is milled to crimp with their wire. It works great.

I'll probably end up getting one with my next order, since it seems to work well for most people. The engineer crimper takes two steps to crimp, but after some practice, all my crimps are good with the female pins. I see how they work with the 16 gauge male pins when they come in.

Yeah Ive crimped with mine well over 50k+ crimps and still works like day one its amazing! With the MFC crimper simply click down two times and insert the wire and then fully crimp. Its basically a one step process once you get the hang of it.
The trick to crimping Mini-Fits on 16awg wire with the PA-21 is to crimp the wire on 1.9mm and the insulation on 2.5mm. Crimp the wire first but don't release until you have straightened the insulation crimp - which tends to bend backwards when you crimp the wire instead of opening the wings outwards - use needle-nose pliers to straighten the insulation crimp bed then release and ease the pin out of the jaws. Use the end of the crimper jaws to close the insulation wings until they are straight then crimp the insulation at 2.5mm. Make sure the crimp wings line up in the jaws to avoid getting a crooked insulation crimp.
Yea, that's how I've been crimping both the male and female pins with 16 gauge. I hate the way the insulation wings bend backwards, but like you said, it's easy to straighten when doing the second crimp. I just did a bunch of SATA and fan terminals and they turned out well.
Thanks for the tip. The crimps came out a lot better (very little bending). I usually like to test the wire crimp by pulling on the pin before doing the insulation crimp, but I think this will work.
