Overclock HELP NEEDED FX 6300

Thread Starter
I am new here and to this whole overclocking thing. I have been reading up on it for a while now and watching videos but I am not 100% sure how to. I don't understand the whole multiplier and stress testing thing. I have an fx 6300 on a gigabyte 970 gaming mobo I tried using overdrive but it keeps reverting back to stock. I want to do it in the bios but I don't understand the multiplier and the volts and stuff. any advice is helpful.

I'll try and help, briefly:

First what you need to know is that bus speed * multiplier = core frequency (clock speed).

On the FX-6300 your bus speed will always be 200mhz, and the processor comes stock at 3500mhz, that gives 17.5 = your multiplier.

The voltage will be called something like core voltage, VID among other things. It is probably at 1.35v stock.

Anyway, the basic idea is to raise your multiplier by one notch (increasing the core frequency), and run a stress testing program until your system crashes. If it doesn't crash at all, then you don't need to add voltage. If it does crash, you will need more voltage for it to be stable. Generally, you increase the voltage by one notch at a time (say, 1.35 to 1.36) and re-run the test and see if it fails. If it doesn't, then congrats, you've just overclocked!

So, you want to start by moving your multiplier from 17.5 to 18 (for 3600mhz), and then run Prime95 (google it), if it fails, then you bump the voltage to 1.36 and try again, if it fails again, you move the voltage to 1.37, and so on until your system is stable at 3600mhz.

You also have to factor in heat, if you're using the stock cooler then please, don't try to overclock at all. You could ruin your investment and have to replace your board + CPU. You need a tower air cooler or any other number of cooling solutions to overclock.

In this case, you want to get a program like RealTemp, AIDA64, CoreTemp or any number of others to monitor your CPU temperature while running stress tests, keep it under 70C for FX and you'll be fine.

A quick, dirty OC for that chip would probably be 4000mhz (20x multiplier) with 1.4v. 99% of FX-6300 should be able to do this. But before you do, and decide to run Prime95, please make sure you have an adequate cooler installed. Still, the traditional way to overclock is really to raise the multiplier then add voltage till stable, raise multi then add voltage till stable, repeat.

Hope this helps.

Yes I know what that program is and I also have the intel burn test one. My CPU is cooled by the coolermaster 212 evo. I know all that multiplier stuff as well my CPU voltage is 1.22 stock. Do I just bring it up to 1.35 right to the start to get anywhere? Also how long am I running my stress tests for?
First you need to turn off all the energy saving things in the bios. There are six or so in there. Then just do as neurotix says and bump the multi and test while monitoring temperatures. The 212 is generally good for 1.4 volts with good case air flow.

It would be better to think of 62C as your orange line and 70C as your red line.

Oh, if it's 1.22v stock then you can probably just raise it to 1.3v for 4ghz. I would try and get a stable 4ghz before going higher. 4.5ghz would probably be an acceptable goal, while anything higher (say 5ghz) would probably produce too much heat for your cooler.

A lot of people say to run Prime95 for 24 hours to be stable, but that's just torture for your CPU. Back when I ran Prime95 (we don't use it on Intel), I would just see if it could pass one loop of it and generally the machine would be stable for gaming that way. 1 loop takes like 15-20 minutes I think. Alternatively you could let it run for an hour. But again, monitor your temps, go do something else but come back and check it every so often. Make sure you're under 70C (or 62C according to some people) and you'll be okay.

Alternatively you can run x264 found here to stress test, it is very effective at finding instability and WILL crash your machine if you're not stable, but it generates far less heat. Since Intel chips tend to run really really hot devil.gif we use this to stress instead. (I still have an FX-8350 machine and I used to bench with it, and ran it at 5ghz, so you can trust my advice). Anyway, get the x264 and run the x264 stability test.bat, pick 5 loops, number of threads "auto" (type it out) and priority to normal. Then let it run until it finishes. If it passes you are probably 99% stable and totally stable for gaming. Give it a try.

Hope this helps you more. smile.gif

Maybe I need some help with my overclock settings I am running the gigabyte 970 gaming sli motherboard I am having trouble finding the settings I need to change. My voltage is changed by +.02 v or -.02 v vs the voltage going to the cpu like 1.35 v there are no bios updates or anything out. I tried just messing with the multiplier but couldn't get that to boot probably because voltage was wrong.

Successfully overclocked to 4.2ghz my voltage is 1.39v temp after hours of prime 95 and a few runs of burn test 42 C.

BCLK: 200mHz
NB Frequency: 2000mHz
HT Link: 2400mHz

RAM 1600
CPU Vcore +0.1v
NB Core: Auto
Vcore Load Line: +100% Medium

anyone have any more advice for me?
It sounds like you are getting the hang of it. Temperatures sound fine so bump up the vcore and clocks and see where it goes.

Do you have IBT AVX? It is a standard here for quickly testing an OC. Try it on very high and see how it goes.

Anyone have this CPU? I have got it successfully overclocked to 4.4 ghz can I go higher on my 212 evo or should I just buy a new processor AMD I would overclock an 8 core. I have a very low budget but play GTA V and BF 1 mostly.

Buy a better cooler. What motherboard and psu are you using?
