Kaby Lake - 5GHz milestone

The 5GHz has been a magic number and a nice OC achievement for any enthusiast since Sandy Bridge, but that was a milestone reserved for a few silicon lottery winners or extreme LN2 cooling overclokers. Now with Kaby Lake this seems more achievable than ever, but I´ve been reading contradicting reports/statistics about how likely is to get a retail 7700K sample to reach 5Ghz.

Some reviews state it´s fairly probable on any average chip, while others are talking about 1/3 of the chips. Also, not much point on being able to reach 5Ghz if temps skyrocket above 90C without an extreme custom loop!

I would love if we could clarify this, as from an enthusiast perspective the ability to OC to 5GHz is compelling and pretty much the only reason to get a Kaby Lake chip over Skylake.

Anyone with more statistics or info until the official Kaby Lake OC thread is launched is welcomed!

delid saves 20 celsius.

most wil prob hit 5ghz cause thats the only selling point on these.

ad a hyperx 212 minimum cooler with fans set to max on it, or invest in a proper cooler.

Yup, not very exciting but I have a mediocre 6700K that refuses to OC above 4.7Ghz and tbh I´m intrigued about the 7700K. If they mostly OC to 5Ghz then I would consider to get one and undelid.
But I´m not switching if I have a big probability to get a 4.8Ghz Kaby-potato chip

Mine is 8 hours realbench stable at 5 ghz.



5.1 might be possible, but temps will be in the mid 80's. Passed 15 minutes, haven't tried an 8 hour test yet since I got it yesterday.
5.1 ghz might be a possibility. My 6700k was hitting these temps at 1.432v for comparison. H110i cooler.

My motherboard is pretty bad for overclocking. MSI Krait gaming with only 1 LLC setting.

So it looks that delid is a must to keep temps at bay unless you draw a good low volt sample from the chip lottery:

I have an h110i which is the same as the h110i gt and you can see my temps. I don't think the fans ever got above 1100 rpm with my custom curve so it was very quiet. I don't use prime95 though, and it definitely does run hotter than my 6700k at the same voltages.

From what I have seen of people I know, that have actually bought retail boxed 7700K's from different stores, they all have been able to do 5ghz at approx. 1.30-1.34 volts, with temperatures around 80-90 degrees under max load, depending on the stress testing/benching program. This was with the cpu's being watercooled on a custom loop, not delidded.

They then delidded them, using CLU under the IHS and Kryonaut on top and obtained an approx 20+ degree drop in temperatures, under the same max load they tested with prior to delidding.
The average temps after delidding under max load, were between 60-65 degrees.

Yup, your temps are clearly better because probably you have one of the good chips. I think this brief statement from Hardcop sums it all:

"Bad" Kaby Lake CPUs are looking to do 4.8GHz at less than 1.3v vCore. "Good" Kaby Lake CPUs are looking to do the magical 5GHz at 1.35v or less. 5GHz looks to be where these hit the wall however. The "golden" Kaby Lake will deliver 5.1GHz, but at a high 1.37v vCore.


I´m pretty confused because while some reviewers report very high temps (>90C) in their OC 7700K, others like the ones at Tweaktown claim temps <80C with a Corsair H110i:

Did I mention in every case AVX Offset was not used, and the system ran 5GHz even when AVX was used? Results I have seen from MSI and ASUS's internal testing indicate that more than half of the CPUs they tested could run 5GHz stable with temperatures not peaking over 80C as long as a good cooler was used - that is excellent news.

Of course at the end you can delid to lower 20-30C your chip, but delidding is a hassle and not for everyone and it will be interesting to know the real probability of getting a 5Ghz Kaby with temps <80C on an average AIO cooler.

Meanwhile I've been dailying a delidded 6700k at 5ghz for almost a year lol

For real people, if you delid these suckers and put CLU on em with good cooling, I wouldn't be surprised to see people get lucky with 5.1-5.3 chips at 1.4-1.45v. I've been running 1.43v for something like 8 months now I want to say, haven't seen any sort of degradation so far but my load temps in gaming + real world usage is in the 50 range.

Well, lottery is definitely more alive than ever, if even the websites are looking at pretty significant thermal differences in their samples:

At 4.8 GHz, the Core i7-7700K passed POV-Ray with ease, however the 1.400 volts needed at that point were pushing the processor up to 95C during OCCT and its mixed AVX workload. At that point I decided to call an end to it, where the CPU was now drawing 122W from idle to load.

The only way to achieve that, is to either buy an already proven one from Silicon Lottery, or do what every hardcore overclocker does and keep binning 7700K's until you get a golden sample or one that is close enough to golden.

Not necessarily, as reported earlier by Tweaktown:

I think the difference is important. If there is a 50% probability of reaching 5Ghz undelidded with temps<80, then you are shooting at a very significant real possibility of a 5.2/5.3 delidded OC.
If most Kaby Lakes require delidding to hit 5Ghz, I wouldn't bother upgrading from Skylake as a delidded Skylake can very probably hit 4.8Ghz and the difference is just too small.

I don´t want to play a costly lottery without knowing the aproximate odds

7700K - 5.2 Ghz @ 680$ (4%)

Not bad at all that 1/4 reach 5.1 @ 1.42v taking into account these can be delidded to get temps under control

5.1 1 hour stable. Temps really jumped up over 5.0.

I just got an h100i V2 cooler and temps seem pretty high. 5.0 @ 1.308v right now and I hit 79 playing BF1. Doing realbench I'm seeing temps up to 83-85. I'm not sure if this is normal or my h100 isnt seating right. I redid it and same thing. The highest my coolant hit was 30.4 playing 2 rounds of BF1. Should it be higher?
