Any good single player RPG games to tide me over until ME: Andromeda?

Hi,

I have the single player RPG itch and am wondering if there are any decent single player RPGs (or a hybrid type single player game) out there that I might have missed in the last few years. I just wrapped up a replay of Mass Effect 2 (still great after all this time!) but don't really want re-play any more of the Bioware line of games - I'm gone through all of them at least twice now.

edit: looking for something that can be easily mapped to a wireless controller for living room PC to big screen play.

Someone suggested Skyrim, which looks great, but there is something about it I just don't like, not sure what it is... I think the story is just too meandering and the game is a tad bit too open ended for my tastes - I constantly find myself running around unsure of what I'm supposed to be doing next (some folks like that, but I like have clear objectives).

What I've played through at least once and enjoyed:

Witcher 1, 2 and 3
ME 1,2 and 3
Dragon Age O,I
Dishonored 1 and 2
Bioshock 1, 2 and Infinite
Jade Empire (old, but loved it)
KOTOR 1 and 2
Deus Ex HR & Mankind Divided (but way too short)
South Park TSoT

Did not enjoy

Dragon Age 2
Fallout 4 (ZZZzzzzz)
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (too empty, no action)
Firewatch
Skyrim (didn't finish)
Assassin's Creed Black Flag (I don't like stealth games at all... give me a ton of weapons then punish me for using them).
MMOs (I don't like MMOs even if they have solid solo content).
Dark Souls series.

Any decent RPGs from say 2010 - present that still hold up and worth a play through?

You listed a bunch of games that aren't at all RPGs, but I'll stick to recommending RPGs only.

I suggest Neverwinter Nights 2: Complete (Mask of the Betrayer being its highlight, but it is the direct expansion to its main campaign), Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, both from GOG (GOG's version of Bloodlines comes with the latest unofficial patch so is good to go out of the box). Also Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition.

These three RPGs are so greatly superior to any modern one, it's really sad. Far more role-playing, gameplay depth/variety, and much better writing quality except for the other NWN 2 campaigns which don't focus on writing quality. They utterly humiliate every modern video game RPG to the point where it's hard to take modern ones seriously.

New Vegas and NWN 2 should both be modded, I can help there. Don't worry about your Fallout 4 experience relating to Fallout: New Vegas; they are very different games from different developers. New Vegas put most of its focus on role-playing, quest design, and writing. Fallout 4 instead focuses on sets/props.

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition has incredible gameplay mechanics such that it is the only evolution to any degree within the RPG genre since 2010. Too bad it has balance issues and lacks role-playing and isn't very story driven, but the gameplay/combat alone is worth it. Just know that it doesn't shine anywhere else.

One thing though: You said Skyrim's objectives aren't clear, but they really are. They are extremely simple, simpler than some of the games you liked, and more importantly they have objective markers if you bring up the map. So they always tell you exactly where to go. "Go to this spot in this dungeon, pick up this helmet, bring it back to this specific guy who we track for you." I'm guessing you just got distracted by its size/scale.

The RPGs I recommended have more ways to approach and complete quests than all of the others you mentioned, without clear markers for everything, so make sure to use common sense and intuition when playing them. They are a step above the rest (even KOTOR 2 which is the closest thing you listed).

- EDIT: Real stealth games don't punish you. Like Dishonored series.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines look intriguing, this one was off my radar, but I will give it a go it might just fit the bill nicely. Thank you for the responses, you make good points.

edit: I just realized games like Firewatch and EGTTR aren't really RPGs, since you don't level and have skill paths, and I should have been more clear in what I was after, A first person adventure or a true RPG that is predominantly played in 1st person was what I am really after (because I will be plaing on a living room TV). For example, Diablo would be excluded because, while a true RPG it is played in 3rd peson and pretty hard to control via a steam controller or XBox one pad since it was designed for a mouse control scheme.. I tried the Razer Turret and hated it, took it back and bought an XBox Controller. The 1st person RPGs like Fallout and BioShock (if Bioshock qualifies) are just so much easier played from a couch.

I should have included that information( (will be playing from a couch) in the main post, but didn't my bad.

Divinity 2
Two Worlds II
Kingdoms of Amalur

Edit: Divinity Original Sin could be as well.

I can second the Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, it's old so don't expect pretty graphics by nowadays standard, maybe there are some mods for it as it's a HL2 engine or should be, maybe hack Cinematic Mod post processing into it if you like.
I've really enjoyed it back in the day, sure as gunner said it's not a very tunnel like RPG or simple go here go go go, you have to explore and figure things out but that is what RPGs are about unlike FPS CoD tunnel running. You should be able to modify your character a bit if I remember right and there are many ways just like in original DeusEx to finish the game, fighting, stealth, talking, ...
It's a fun one.

I've never tried NWN but it's a popular one.

Fallout for me is F1,2,T, haven't played the rest as Bethesda nuked it with 3D FPS approach and their TES was rather boring with unclear objectives aka explore explore and no storyline to even start from but maybe that was just my language barrier back then.

As far as 2010+ goes, most games are pretty bad in this period unfortunately.

Might be different than what you're used to, but, you maybe you can try Dark Souls.

The Dark Souls series is just too hard for me. I tired it and while I see the appeal for some folks of figuring out 'boss fight' strats, I was just not for me. I don't have the reflex skills for that anymore (maybe in the 90s!).

Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll add it to my did not like list for clarity.

Was a good suggestion, just not one that will work for me (I could never get the boss strat timings down).

Game was hard!

Also take a look at Risen series. Not amazing games but could be time fillers.

It might be worth checking out TES: oblivion. I played 100+hrs, but never got into skyrim.

Not a RPG, but if you haven't played portal 1/2, you should:thumb:
