The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute study of eight- and nine-year-olds found video gaming boys had greater conduct and emotional problems while watching TV was associated with greater hyperactivity and inattention.

Girls didn't have the same correlation.

This equates to 2.58-fold greater odds for a male that plays on average 2 hours per day per week. Television viewing was associated with greater odds of hyperactivity/inattention in males (OR 1.04 (95% CI 1.00-1.07)). There were no significant relationships for females.

This topic seems to pop up every 6-12 months or so on OCN, but this study is one of the first larger-scale studies to focus on the potential media consumption - psychological impact relationship. The correlational nature of the study means you can make conclusions on which factor came first (see the second quote above), but one of two options exists: kids who play games every afternoon are being negatively influenced by their video game consumption, or kids who have concerning emotional and behavioural styles are making up the majority of those who consistently play video games.

That is a confounder for not being a single variable. Teletubbies isn't equal to GTA...
Literally we should jail these people who prey on parents with separation anxiety. Just how biased could a study get when they haven't even questioned the 'kids' themselves! Wow, "My friend in the health community said computers give you cancer..." material right there.

This is just another one of those studies that prove what they want it to prove.

This behavior difference is easily explained. Other studies have shown that boys who run around and are really active at recess are calmer and more attentive in the classroom than when not allowed to do so. Similarly girls are less affected by such.

That would equate to other parts of their lives too. If all the boys do is play video games and not use any of their pent up energy, they're going to have "greater odds of abnormal conduct."

They're 8-10 year kids, so the nature of the video games and TV shows being consumed are likely pretty mild - the data is provided by the parents of the kids, so the parents would be reporting consumption that they're aware of (and thus likely approve of).

So, if anything, the age of the kids being sampled and the likely genre of media being consumed is going to reduce any correlation occurring, rather than biasing it with super-graphic video games and R rated movies lol...

What I'm saying is that even if the variables which we don't know are assumed to be BEST CASE scenario, they've still found this correlation. In a worse case scenario, it might be - funnily enough - a stronger correlation.
