This topic seems to pop up every 6-12 months or so on OCN, but this study is one of the first larger-scale studies to focus on the potential media consumption - psychological impact relationship. The correlational nature of the study means you can make conclusions on which factor came first (see the second quote above), but one of two options exists: kids who play games every afternoon are being negatively influenced by their video game consumption, or kids who have concerning emotional and behavioural styles are making up the majority of those who consistently play video games.

did you know the sitting and eating lots of carbohydrate will raise blood sugars, which will raise glutamate in the brain, which can lead to excitation of brain chemistry, it isn't like anyone thing.

I partially attribute my success in the tech industry (and aversion of serious depression) to gaming at an early age. This kind of stuff is always bogus scare tactic click bait garbage, and this is no different- disregard.

So, if anything, the age of the kids being sampled and the likely genre of media being consumed is going to reduce any correlation occurring, rather than biasing it with super-graphic video games and R rated movies lol...

Then that is a MASSIVE flaw right there. Assuming the content is mild and parents reporting what they know. Ha. Go to a GameStop some time and just watch for a while. Dozens of kids coming in with parents buying grand theft auto and the like. Half the parents buy it without a question, the other half ask about the rating and buy it anyway. Like parents know what kind of games are being played. just LOL.

What I'm saying is that even if the variables which we don't know are assumed to be BEST CASE scenario, they've still found this correlation. In a worse case scenario, it might be - funnily enough - a stronger correlation.

But hey, who am I to argue with the undergrad med student here thumb.gif
Oh, please do. Since I barely passed statistics, I cannot hold a candle to anybody. Not very proud of not having done any better, but I never was the memorizing type.

Here is a perspective.....

As a Father of a child with Autism, my wife and I found he is most comfortable playing video games and drawing. As compared to going out and running around as much as the other kids. While he does join the others outside, he spends more time with video games and drawing than the others.

The problem with studies like this is it makes it easy to point to video games as a cause of behavior, when it isn't, thus leading to unaddressed issues. It was several years of multiple specialists to get our son the help he needed.

Reports like this just need to be careful, as they could lead to exclusion of activities that are helpful to many. Be it games, painting, singing, Yo-Yos.

Did you know that the brain is complex and multiple factors can be meaningful contributors to the spectrum of mental health, and that any one relationship doesn't dismiss another relationship?

They aren't assuming the content is mild. I was just giving some thoughts on the factors that we don't know.

Maybe you are right: maybe 8-10 year olds do play lots of GTA. Maybe that also explains why they found the correlation that they did.... redface.gif

The reasons you describe are perhaps part of the reason why the authors of the study aren't trying to track the specific genres of video games and TV shows being consumed...

Here's the real truth: you want positive feedback with your child. However children want to reflect in their own discretion. Spirit comes at the price of ego conflicts. I literally break into a thousand pieces when they are overmedicalized. Parents don't know to hold back when kids do good on their own. Having a 'creative' kid is not a safe bet, but nothing worth having is...

The problem isn't video games, it's parents who use video games as a digital baby sitter.
