To PurdueBoy:
Thanks for the offer, but no thank you. I'm an AMD fan at heart and I agree with them that not having the ability to overclock a chip is just silly, so having that "K" on an intel chip is basically a requirement in my eyes.
My message to intel. Is it really that hard to just not lock up almost every chip you make. I'd be all over an unlocked 6100 for every budget build ever.

I meant get 1 not 2. 2is not worth it at all.

You can already see what mobo you want, im 99% sure EK will have a waterblock or a mounting kit available on launch etc.

I'd love to wait for zen as I imagine it would save me a ton of money and present a lot more range of parts to choose from. However I should be loosing my main system probably this weekend (pending sale) so I'm on a time crunch and can't wait that long.

So far I've been taking the opinions into account and of course have made a build three, lol. So goes any build process. Basically it's just build one with less ram and a stand by h55 until the water parts show up. Plus it's always good to have a spare cooler around.

My vote is easily build one, but drop down to 16GB ram to start and put the money into a better power supply. You can always add another 1080 later when they are much lower in price, if you decide you even want the extra performance and hassle of SLI over just selling the 1080 to upgrade to something next gen easily.

You say enthusiast build, that's no enthusiast power supply thumb.gif

Launch date Zen isn't going to save you money, chances are they will price high initially for the early adopter crowd, then the price will work down to it's equivalent in performance per dollar compared to Intel. I don't expect any Phenom II era epic budget builds this time around.

edit: I expect prices to compete their way down a bit but probably not until this summer - next year if at all. Primarily in the high end / flag ship battle ground which is the 8 core market.

I tend to agree with that forecast, Serious Don.

But I do agree wiht the OP that it's a good time to sell before the launch. I just hope you can bide your time till the launch, as that will shove down prices on intel's side of the market too, one would hope.

Haha, I suppose it might be high time to up my power supply game. My history in that category hasn't been stellar, but that being said I've never had a single power issue ever with any build.

2x OCZ 700 mod xtreme pro (no 80 plus anything)
Logisys 400w cheap azz for media center
CX430m for the wifes build
40 dollar retailplus 700 for second media center
second hand thermaltake TR2-RX 1000 for 40 dollars.

I've never paid more than 60 dollars for a PS and like I said, had no issues. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Anyway, point of this, I've changed the PS in the new rig to an RM750i fully modular. That's probably fine, but I'm clearly not a PS guy.

I think you have gotten lucky! I had a Logisys cheapo before, and since you are using it in a low power build it may not matter, but since you are going higher power with this build, I would up the quality! Or perhaps use a nice Power Conditioner/UPS to plug into.
