Question about gamma shifting and monitor overclocking

Does this result in a permanent change? or does down clocking return the colors back to normal? Cant seem to find a good answer for that , experiences rather.

I had the Acer XB241H and the ASUS PG248Q and neither of them resulted in a change in the gamma shift when overclocked. The gamma shift is determined by the physical design of the panel, such as TN panels. The only way the gamma shift changes is if you view the panel from a higher or lower position.

Thanks for the response, makes things feel a bit safer. I overlocked my other screen from 60 to its max of 66 and did not get any percievable changes.

That said on many overclocking guides they report that sometimes you're going to get color/gamma shifting (not from viewing angle). Wondering for those that have exhibited this behavior if it is reversible without adjusting your color profiles. (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/pc-peripheral/how-overclock-your-monitor-3635779/)

Oh, now I know what you mean. Yeah, the XB241H and the PG248Q behaved differently when overclocked, but it wasn't permanent (and I think it can't be permanent) and I had to overclock them to 180 Hz to really notice. The XB241H's gamma would be increased slightly while overclocked and the overall image looked a little bit washed out. The PG248Q's gamma seemed to get reduced slightly. That was kind of nice, actually.

 

I'm not recommending these monitors at all though. I'm just using them to share my experience to say that it can happen but it's not permanent. It's almost like the panel's specs change while overclocked.

Yea, with that response I just went ahead and overclocked my dell screen to 75hz which isn't anywhere near as extreme as I could of. Nothing perceivable actually changed so it must of been extremely minimal.

But knowing from experiences it was most likely reversible gave me a thumbs up to go for it on my new screen. Was just being a worrywart~ It also wasn't really covered elsewhere in detail. drunken.gif cheers~

I didn't say "most likely reversible". It's absolutely 100% not permanent. In addition to my personal experience, I have yet to see anyone saying that they have irreversible changes ever since overclocking their monitor's refresh rate.
