FX 8350 IHS removed accidentally, HELP!

Thread Starter
Hi, i accidentally removed the IHS from my AMD FX 8350 CPU when trying to remove it from heatsink. (I was trying everything it was brutally fused to heatsink).

some pics ->
http://imgur.com/a/vvBdO

Can i simply place the IHS back on? Or will it no longer transfer the heat properly? Do I need special equipment / solder to re-attach it? Can i just use some glue on the edges where it is black?

Aparently it is soldered, whatever that mean (http://www.overclock.net/t/1318995/official-fx-8320-fx-8350-vishera-owners-club/10600)

Thanks for your help guys. I didn't even know what an IHS was before doing some research, I thought i had broken the CPU haha smile.gif

Sorry, mate. You've ripped the die right out. That CPU will never work again.

oh, so I am seeing 2 halves of the CPU die? or the part stuck to the IHS is the whole die?
And does it have to line up too precisely in the socket that it would be impossible for the contact to be good if i just placed it back on?

Thanks

Yes you are seeing 2 halves of the die. It is 100% impossible to make this chip ever work again.

well. that is entirely depressing.
I had wanted to put it into another working motherboard and run stress test to try to melt the heat paste, but I could not put it in due to the metal lever that locks it into the socket blocking the heatsink.
Also tried running a hairdryer on it to no avail.

What i missed seeing which i read earlier was to put in in a oven pre-heated to 200c and then switched off and leave it in the cooling oven for about 30 mins. That might have worked to loosten up the heat paste but read that too late :***(

Holy Moses, this split is..... horrible and amazing at the same time. What did you used for thermal solution? Concrete? We had some really bad stucked ones, after years of not changing the paste, running for 10 years almost 24/7 with high temperatures, even then we still did not destroyed a CPU like that....

yeah like others have said you ripped the die right out of the PCB, AMD solders the die to the IHS next time you get the CPU stuck run prime95 for a few minutes before removing the heatsink it will loosen up the thermal paste.

I believe it was the stock thermal grease that came with the CPU / Cooler bundle from AMD. It was a gray color.
I have been using it in a computation cluster so It's had all 8 cores running pretty heavy. Not all the time but whenever i've been using it.
