Looking for "scary" game suggestions

I just played "Outlast" which was pretty cool, and I'm a fan of games like Resident Evil, The evil within type stuff. Looking for something to hold me over till Resident Evil 7 is released, any suggestions?

Thanks

Outlast is like a B movie version of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, so definitely give this a try.

Even better, Penumbra and SOMA. The same types of games as Amnesia from the same developers (Penumbra and Amnesia inspired almost every modern horror game including Outlast and probably RE7 somewhat), and vaguely similar to Outlast, but with a million times more depth than every game mentioned above. They are some of the deepest and most well written games in the history of the industry.

Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason is another horror game with exceptional writing for this medium.

Oh, and let's not forget Underhell which is free and like a first-person classic Resident Evil at times. It is such a multidimensional game; it has a hub which is a haunted house, filled with psychological horror and intriguing storytelling. It as a prologue which is a short tactical FPS mission, but the bulk of it is chapter 1 (other chapters yet to be released) which starts off like a first-person classic Resident Evil sort of but with greater freedom of movement, stealth, and much more intricate gameplay, and then turns into a group-based faster paced survival horror game with huge amounts of enemies.

Anna: Extended Edition is a psychological horror game with wonderful, one of a kind visual storytelling.

Resident Evil, in the past, was fun and intense but never had any real depth. The same for Outlast. These games might pleasantly surprise you.

Scariest game ever for me is Silent Hill 2...if you can find the PC version in any format, you'll be blown away if you are into "disturbing" games. Other than that...not sure cause most games I don't find all that scary. Silent Hill 2 is basically a masterpiece though.

Word of warning, Dead Space is more of a shooter than a horror game, like Resident Evil 4. Personally I don't see anything scary or even intense or uneasy about them, as you play as a powerful space marine essentially and easily destroy everything in your path (you're just outnumbered and there's a lot of blood).

Classic Silent Hill (1-3) is great, although hard to play these days. Uneasiness is the feeling they deliver best, same for Anna: Extended Edition, due to the material in both being outright disturbing.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I forgot to mention that I do prefer games where you're able to actually attack/kill things instead of just running away from it all.....but either way it's all good. Will check out out what's already been listed, keep em coming.

For what it's worth, I don't think any of the games recommended so far only allow you to run away from enemies. Don't know much about Alan Wake though, never played it.

You can't do anything to the baddies in SOMA. You just have two "lives" as it were, and you're kinda limping and gimped when you're on the last one.

No combat doesn't mean only fleeing. Every enemy in that game has a unique AI, but for many of them one can employ stealth and distraction as well.

Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 are annoying because they features a fixed camera angle so it's possible to be attacked by monsters you can't fight back against or can't escape.

Wow. Silent Hill 2. Yes, I'd agree it is damn disturbing....

...but not as disturbing that it has been AGES since SH2 came out and in that time the many of us are still using it as an example. Ouch.

No good horror in the past decade and a half? The "essential" list is basically what BoredGunner suggested.

I remember the first AvP (AvP Classic on Steam) to be scary as F.

It's a small genre that's for sure. Horror is also a weak film genre and an oversaturated literary genre as a whole.

These. Check out Cry of Fear too. It's free on Steam.
