GPU block not making contact with memory ?

After removing my GPU from the water cooling loop I noticed that 3 memory chips on the right side bank of my Gainward GTX 1080 Pheonix have only 33% or so coverage by the cold plate, whereas the rest of the chip is not contacting.

The other memory chips, VRM and mosfets are indeed making good contact. Contacted EK and am awaiting a reply.

What do you guys think about it ?

Really can't see anything from that photo

The photo shows it. There is a gap against the light. Removing the gpu block revealed that there were no stains on the right bank of memory chips on the actual cold plate, whereas all the other memory chips did show the blueprint of the actual thermal pads. This means that there is little to no actual contact as there are no marks on the cold plate that is not contacting.

looks like the block wasn't machined right. most likely a defect.

That's the only thing I can come to conclude. The other memory chips are perfect using the required 0.5mm thermal pads. I tried removing other thermal pads such as the 2.0mm one that goes on the memory controller to see if that was stooping it from sandwiching and I found out it had nothing to do with it.

I did however fix the problem, I applied some of the 1.0mm thermal pads from the backplate to fill in the gap and it worked, now I have full contact on the memory chips however I have 2/3 left on the backplate for passive VRM cooling.

I will ask EK about sending me replacement pads I suppose, but I can confirm now that there are no more gaps. Pheww

that's good news i was in a similar situation not long ago and it was a pain to fix.

I have a titan x pascal and the memory closest to vrm on mine did not make the best contact either. When I took off waterblock you could see a difference from where it will leave a spot on the waterblock itself.
Also I read someone else on the titan x pascal mentioned the same thing a couple weeks ago he also mentioned he could run overclock memory 850 after using thicker thermal pads..
I myself used thicker alphacool thermal pads a while ago and can run firestrike 800 mem 200 core some can't get more than 450 on mem makes me think what block are they running.. I am not one to talk bad about EK I had 980 ti and titan x with ek blocks never had issue .. pascal ones seem not great QC..

Interesting to note. Hopefully they will at least send me a bunch of thermal pads. I am using 0.5mm on the left and top memory bank and 1.0mm on the right memory bank. Its a shame really that its barely 1mm but enough to cause concern. At least its also a pretty simple fix.
