I think my motherboard is dead ?

So I have a Asus maximus v formula that doesn't post. The qcode leds don't even light up. Start/reset buttons and rog leds do though. It was working fine until a few weeks ago it wouldn't boot. I reset bios and and it still would not boot. After a few minutes it just booted by itself out of the blue. It happened again a week later but this time no boot until I disconected the motherboard and jump the psu with just the pump to see if it was dead, which it seemed fine. When I plugged the 24 pin back in it did the same thing and booted a few minutes later on its own. It seems like a short or bad ground on somewhere but...

Things that I have tried are booting with no drives, no memory, swapping memory slots, one stick etc.

Also unplugged pcie cables(I have hard tubing and didn't want to drain my loop just yet).

Tried a brand new psu that I checked to make sure was working, checked the old one too.

The only other thing to try is to reseat the cpu and totally remove the gpu.

I just wanted a few opinions before I ripped it apart.

Yeah, I forgot to mention I pulled the battery and used a new one. I guess I' m going to tear it down today so I can pull the gpu and cpu proprly, but I'm almost certain it is the motherboard. I would think thatI would at least see the qcode led if it was anything else. I'll tear it down and update if I find anything.

If you think it might be bad grounding somewhere, try running the motherboard on a non-conductive surface (like the box it came in) outside of your PC case, and start it by shorting the power switch pins. Sometimes, for whatever reason, boards can work outside of a case and then not work when in the case. :/

It will be a bit of effort given that you've got a liquid cooling loop setup, but it won't hurt to try.

Yeah just got done trying this. I'm sure it was the board, doesn't matter now though. I drop the cpu in the socket and rekt it.

I'll test the cpu on another board, but I think I'm just going to sell the ram and cpu and upgrade to kabby.

DDR3 RAM's pretty expensive both second hand and brand new right now (at least in the UK), so selling DDR3 is a good idea right now. Do it if you have the upgrade itch!

Easily could be a ram/slot issue. Was sure i had 2 dead boards, only turned out be my prize 2000mhzc7 pis.

If it is trying to boot at all, most likely a component issue. DDR3 is dirt cheap all over ebay atm. Really surprised it would not be so in the uk??? Just bought 1600c7 psc based 1.5 volt pis for $30. also can be a bad bios chip. I've resurrected several mobo's that previous owners were sure to be dead. $10-15 fix.

Yeah I have 2400mhz Corsair Dominator Platinums.Selling those and the 3770k should cover the cost of a decent board. I might just keep them though and get used z77 board so I have a 2nd rig.

Thought about the bios chip, I even pulled it out of the socket and reinserted it. I bashed the pins on cpu socket pretty good though when I was putting the cpu back in and I don't even feel like fooling with it. The qcode leds were not even coming on and giving any codes or anything though. I couldn't find anything visually wrong with the board though so idk.

That's sad. For some reason, DDR3 has skyrocketed over here in the last six months whereas DDR4 and DDR2 are either normal price or dirt cheap. Most 16GB kits of DDR3 are like £90 to £100 brand new, and used sets of 16GB are about £80. DDR4 however is as cheap as RAM usually is. It's weird.

Anyway yeah, sell your CPU and RAM, see if you can even Ebay your mobo as "for parts or not working", get something out of it.
