Confused about PCI Lanes - Can I run all this on a 7700K?

Hello all,

I am a bit confused how adding up PCI lanes work, etc...

My goal is to run a 7700K on a Asus ROG Maximus IX Formula mobo with a Samsung 960 pro m.2 nvme in addition to a GTX 1080 and a PCI-e Intel 400GB NVME. Will this processor / mobo combo support the "lanes" needed?

Yes. The lanes used by the drives are provided by the chipset, not the processor.

Z270 supports 16 "graphics" lanes that go directly to the CPU. These have lower latency, and are why you see the Z-series has 16 lanes.

It also has 24 other PCI-e lanes that go to the Southbidge and get to the CPU via the DMI. Longer latencies and shares priority with everything that isn't RAM or GPU, but is perfectly capable of supporting SSDs and other less intensive parts.

The i7-7700K provides 16 PCI-e 3.0 lanes and the Z270 chipset provides up to 28 PCI-e 3.0 lanes.

It doesn't look like that motherboard has any x4 slots for the PCI-e drive though.

Can I just run it in the slow below the video card?

If you put it in the x16 slot, it will cut the lanes provided to your video card in half. A more sensible solution would be finding a motherboard with a x4 slot. There doesn't appear to be many though. Do you need a PCI-e SSD?

I already have it, so I'd just be moving it into this build - I suppose I can just sell it and go full m.2 / ssd

Your video card should still perform within like 98% of its maximum performance with 8 lanes. I believe high end video cards have just recently begun getting bottlenecked by PCI-e 2.0 x16 bandwidth, which is approximately equal to PCI-e 3.0 x8.
